I have read and learnt big time here, and want to thank all active people for
sharing information they have.

My problem is more of oppinion asking than problem solving.

Ia also have this situation, that old server machine is so old that it has
to be replaced. It runs W2Kserver and it is used as printerserver, file
server, anti-vir management server and pdc. Office is small, less than 30
computers. Additional servers only 3.

As time has gone, people has left the office and returned and so on...So the
user accounts has som 50+ entries, from wich only 25-30 is active. Also when
this network was built, the people who did it, were actually officeworkers
making the network at their sparetime. File sharin permits for example starts
with let everyone have full control.

Now. Do I really need to take from that old pdc anything else with, except
IP address and computer name .And those files of course. But just kill the
old, and buid a new server in which ther is only needed user accounts, and
wisely made file shares.

Thank you in advance

Hello Joke,

If i understand you correct you like to upgrade your 2000 domain to 2008.
An inplace upgrade from 2000 to 2008 is not possible. The easiest way to
achive this is to add the 2008 server as member to the domain, upgrade the
schema and promote it to DC. After the promotion make it DNS and Global catalog
server and move the 5 FSMO roles to it. Then you can retire the old DC if
needed. But better keep it just for redundancy/failover of AD/DNS. If you
will use the new FFL/DFL features from 2008 you have of course to remove it.

The data you can copy with robocopy.exe fromthe old to the new server.

Best regards
