I'm wondering if I can just do an upgrade on my 2000 DC sp4 to 2003 r2 and
have it be my DC. I currently only have one 2000 DC on my network and I'm
thinking the easiest way to get to 2003 is just do an upgrade.

Do I still need to run ADPrep before or can I just upgrade?

Hello Kelly,

You can do an inplace upgrade without problem and yes you have to run adprep
before to prepare the schema for 2003. If you have additional hardware you
can also install the 2003 as additional DC and move all 5 FSMO roles Global
catalog, DNS and DHCP to the new one and then demote the old server. Depends
on your situation.

Best regards

Well as I stated in a post in the AD newsgroup, the ADPrep /forestprep
fails.

I've posted my log information there.

Also does it matter if I'm running in mixed mode or not. All of my NT 4.0
Servers are off and are no longer a part of our domain.

Hi Kelly,

It doesn't matter if you are running the Windows 2000 DC in the mode of
"Windows 2000 mixed", "Windows 2000 mixed" mode can support Windows Server
2003 based domain controller. Since all of the Windows NT 4.0 servers are
no longer a part of the domain, you may demote them and disjoint them from
the domain. After you finish the in-place upgrade the Windows 2000 DC to
Windows Server 2003 DC, you may consider raise domain and forest functional
levels in Windows Server 2003 to improve the domain functionality.

For more information, please refer to:

Hope this can be helpful.
