I have most of the details worked out for migration and upgrade but need to
work out the new servers (2k8 x64) taking over the IP addresses of our
current DC's. Should i attempt to do this first by changing the current DC"s
ips to soemthing else and the new ones assuming their IP Address before
migrating (setting up DNS on the new servers for the clients) or wait until
the full migration has been done and then start changing IP's?

Also, once the migration is complete and i need to retire the current domain
controllers, is it as simple as demoting them and removing from the domain or
are there any 'hidden' gotchas / ghosts that will need to be removed? I
couldnt find any good documentation out there on removing domain controllers.

Hello InfiniteRealms,

Missed the ip part. Why will you change them and not use new ones? Anyway,
if you like to change them i would do it after the old DC's are removed completely
also in DNS, then change the new DC's to the old ip and reboot. Do it one
by one and check always after reboot DNS settings and also that, if you use
AD integrated zones, all changes are replicated before going on with the
next one. Do this steps at close of business so your users are not effected
for the change period.

Best regards

I did this in the transition to 2000 from NT, but i cannot find my old notes
on what order i did it. Back then it was mainly having to reconfigure DHCP
settings (dns/wins) on all of the DHCP servers, but now, besides DHCP, it
has more to do with we have a fair amount of SSO and LDAP applications that
lookup to that IP.
