So just to understand things clearly. if i buy a laptop at walmart for $300
it comes with XP and i'm alllowed to run server software such as IIS. On
the other hand, If you spend $2000 on a really good desktop then another
$999 for windows 2003 server (because you write code that runs on server for
a living), MS doesn't see it fit for you to check your e-mail or to use MSN
messenger anymore. Now that i think about it, windows 2008 server is
considered an acceptable OS for windows live so it seems there is just a
policy against 2003 server..

I refuse to use Outlook because its slow and bloated but outlook express is
a lean and mean, no-frills mail client that just works really well (except
the 1000 contact limitations). I have a domain name that is on all my
business cards but all my family friends and 1/2 of my customers still use
my free hotmail account. I've had it since MSN was called Marvel in the mid
90s and its become so important to me i would be willing to pay an anual fee
to keep it open and active.

Who do i need to write a lettter to in order to plead for support on windows
2003?

Leon

Windows Server is a "server" grade version of Windows. Microsoft has
never considered it to be used as a "general" user Windows (a la
Windows XP.)

MSN Messenger is old, and obsolete. Replaced by Windows Live Messenger.
Should MS have to continue to support Windows 3.1, or DOS 6.22 just because
a handful of users prefer to be stuck in the 20th Century?

It isn't a 'policy', just the reality of moving forward. I've got software
which ran fine under MS DOS 6.22, which doesn't run worth a diddly-dam on
Windows XP.

And MS Outlook Express hasn't been developed since 2006. It is a component
of MS Internet Explorer, which hasn't shipped since MS stopped selling
Windows XP.

Hotmail is still supported; but it hasn't been called, "MSN Hotmail" since
MS rolled out "Windows Live". It is now, "Windows Live Hotmail". And it is
still accessible with an HTTPMail client; albeit the end of support for
WebDAV means the end of support for MS Outlook Express. Windows Live Mail
supports the new, "DeltaSync" protocol, and works just fine for HTTPMail
access.

Whomever is in charge of the "Buggy Whip" division of Microsoft.

I don't recall MSn ever being called Marvel. I also don't recall any licensing agreements to permit Msn to use that name.

Marvel went public in '91 well in advance of MSN and retained the rights of that name throughout the entire 90's.

Fyi..- at IPO, initial parent corporation was Revlon, ToyBiz(a Marvel subsidiary) gained control or the company and name when the
company went bankrupt, '97, finally escaping in 2000, today it and the name are part of Disney)

Msn was originally called The Microsoft Network launched in '95, later renamed MSN Classic with Msn 2.0 software(with its branded
MSN Preview(stage show like appearance), subsequent versions were 2.5, 2.6 before jumping up a few numbers to 5.x

Hotmail, shortly after acquisition by Msft was renamed MSN Hotmail.
Afaik, the Marvel name wasn't used in Hotmail's history either.

As someone who's always been interested in historical accuracy, could you provide some links or data indicating MSN use of the
Marvel name(e.g. local, country specific branding ????)

Ok i may be mistaken but i still think Marvel was the name of the dial-up
internet service that Microsoft was trying to unveil before they decided on
"The Microsoft Network" all this was about the same time as the windows 95
beta rollout. I googled "Microsoft marvel 1995" and below is the first link
that popped up. if the name was not Marvel then i apologize.

http://www.highbeam.com/doc/1G1-16200345.html

The bottom line is that I've been using MS' Internet explorer and Outlook
express and windows messenger live from their very first version up to the
most recent version they will allow me to run on my desktop. I would love to
run windows live but it since it bars windows 2003 server then I have no
choice but to stay with older versions of windows live messenger 8.1 and
outlook express 6.

Why am i running windows 2003 server? well I'm a developer and many of my
customers use windows 2003 server. Code i write is for phone companies and
many of them are using windows 2003, windows 2000 and some of them even
windows NT embedded. I'm running SQL 2008 on this machine but i have to
write code that is compatible with SQL 2000 because there is still a large
installed base that i have to be able to patch if a bug pops up.

I'm only bitching because i feel that if the install module did not have
windows 2003 server restricted, i think the code would work. There is
nothing that can run on windows XP that will fail on windows 2003 unless the
developer manually decides it must work like that and windows live install
on XP.

No. Other than upgrading to an OS which supports the newer apps, no. I
couldn't run Windows Live Mail on a creaky old HP Pavilion 6745C until I
upgraded the OS from Windows ME to Windows XP Home Edition. And that,
currently at SP3, will go EoL in April, 2014. The hardware requirements for
Windows Vista are greater than that creaky old HP Pavilion can handle. It is
almost as obsolete as the HP Vectra 486/33T sitting out in the garage.

"Code named, "Marvel"". Sort of like, "Longhorn", or "Capricorn". I own a
"Capricorn", which was the HP development code name for the HP 85 computer.
Never sold as, "Capricorn", though (and the reason there is an "Apple"
computer, as Steve Wozniak built his "Apple I" out of parts legally acquired
from HP when he worked there as an engineer's assistant; he offered his
design to HP, as required under the program by which he got the parts, and
HP released their interest in the design, as it duplicated their "Capricorn"
product."

"Longhorn" was the development code name for the OS currently shipped by
Microsoft as, "Windows Vista".

Code names are internal development project names, and often won't be
released under the code name. Calling a commercial product, "Marvel" would
almost certainly invite the legal attention of the owners of the publisher
of that name.

And I was unable to run Windows Live Messenger on an HP Pavilion 6745C;
until I upgraded it from Windows ME to Windows XP.

As Rin Ogata (fictional character from the manga/anime story /Rideback/)
says, "The world changes."

Will someone please remind me why this topic is still being discussed in OE
General newsgroup (other than the fact that Leon hijacked the thread on the
3rd and began the crosspost to WLMessenger newsgroup on the 4th without
removing the crosspost)?

@Leon: If you've already got WLMessenger v8.1 running in Win2003 Server (as
your second post today suggests), stick with it: Win2003 is one of the OSS
where you will not be forced to upgrade to WLMessenger v14.0.8089 in the
coming weeks. See
http://messengersays.spaces.live.com...9E!82557.entry
and the 28 Aug-09 Update at the bottom of the page.

I have no idea what you are smoking but Windows Live Messenger runs like a charm on
this W2K3 Enterprise box. Outlook which I also use in conjunction with Exchange runs
extremely fast here and I do not see anyone having issues with it unless it is self
induced.
You are talking a big nothing and please learn how to use W2K3 and Outlook instead
of blaming everyone and anyone for you incompetence.
Just for you to know what I use so as Windows Live Messenger works flawlessly as
does Outlook 2003
