2003 sp2 exchange running on a 2000 sp4 server

currently i have a 2003 domain controler running all roles, I've added a 2008
ad server have not moved the roles to this server yet, however it is running
DNS.

I also have a 2000 sp4 server domain controler as our Exchange server which
is running Exchange 2003 sp2.

Goal here is to add another 2008 server and 2010 Exchange, as your aware I
cannot do this with a 2000 domain controler in the mix.

I've ran the 2008 adprep (/forestprep & /domainprep) on all domain
controlers all when well, however when I try to rise the level of the domain
on the 2003 & 2000 ad servers, it will not let because I have a 2k domain
controler in the mix.

where do I go from here?

Mike

Hello Mike,

Raising the functional level requires to Windows server 2003 that all Windows
2000 DCs are removed. So as demoting with Exchange installed isn't supported,
i would do it in 1 of 2 ways.

Move Exchange to a Windows member server 2000/2003, i prefer Windows server
2003 and then demote the Windows 2000 DC. After that you can go on with the
upgrade to Windows server 2008 and Exhange 2010.

Or you can export all mailboxes to .pst files and uninstall Exchange from
the Windows 2000 DC and then demote it. NOw you can go on with Windows server
2008 and directly import the .pst into Exchange 2010.

Doesn't matter which way you choose, make sure to have current backups and
think about building a lab for testing BEFORE going on the production system.

Thanks for your help on this,

thinking these were my options, neither of which I like.

would another option work with less down time? run Exchange 2007 on a 2003
member server? import the mailboxes done, then demote all 2k ad servers, then
bring my 2008/exchange 2010 into the mix, thoughts?

Hello Mike,

First it depends on the functional levels, it is supported with:

DFL:
Windows 2000 Native Functional Level

FFL:
Windows 2000 Forest Functional Level

Second you must have at least one "Windows Server 2003 SP1 DC" with GC enabled
must be in the Exchange site.

See:

Again thanks,
Question actually 2;

I 've installed exchange 2003 updated to sp2 on a 2003 windows sp2 member
server, installed prefectly, able to move my first mailbox (in the process
now), everything seems fine so far, however concerned about your comment must
have a 2003 sp1 DC in the domain, which I do not, I have 3 DC's and 3 GC's
1-2000 sp4 (running Exchange 2003 sp2) DC/GC, 1-2003 sp2 DC/GC/Operations
master/RID-PDC-infrastucture, 1-2008 DC/GC. I have no server running 2003 sp1.

Question is will or when I run into problems with not having a 2003 sp1 DC
in the mix? Remember this needs to be in place to demote the 2000 sp4 DC/GC
server running Exchange 2003 sp2.

Concerned if I move all mailboxes to the new 2003 server and everything
works then demote/uninstall Exchange something will fail, should I be
concerned?

the other question is when I move all the mailboxes is it just a matter
uninstalling the exchange software not to see it in system admin?

Hello Mike,

Windows server 2003 SP1 is the MINIMUM that must run in the site, higher
is no problem and you have higher OS version as listed.

I have had never problems when moving mailboxes to another Exchange, but
of course you should have a backup.

This article is the way you should move Exchange to another one and uninstall
it:
