2008 Backup USB drive rotation. Safely remove Hardware?

A new replacement SBS 2008 installation. Two USB portable drives as backup.

Plan is to rotate weekly. One on-site, one off-site.

Changeover on a Friday by a non technical office worker.

Previously a daily tape change (SBS2003) was possible, and simple with no
"console" involvement.

Are there "safely remove hardware" issues when the drive is swapped?

Just change it regardless?

Or is there a way / need to automate "disconnection" on a Fri am before the
changeover is accomplished?

TIA
Andy

In SBS 2003, Windows 2008, XP, Vista or Windows 7, I've never had a problem
with an external USB hard drive by just pulling the USB cable, as long as
write caching has been disabled (which it usually is by default for external
USB devices).

If you look at Device Manager | Disk Drives | <your USB drive> | Properties
| Policies (tab), it should default to:

Optimize for Quick Removal
This settings disables write caching on the disk and in Windows, so
you can disconnect this device without using the Safe Removal icon.

Note: if the external drive is powered by a power supply, I usually suggest
turning off the drive first, then unplugging the USB cable. If the external
USB drive gets it power through the USB port, I tell my clients to just pull
the USB cable without the need for the Safe Removal utility.

If you want a "Belt and Suspenders" approach, there is a utility called
Devcon which can be scheduled to run as a Task after the backup but before
pulling the USB cable. This utility can perform the same function as Safe
Removal.

Thanks Merv

The drives are USB powered.

Devcon had appeared during my Googling, but I will follow your advice re
"Optimize for Quick Removal" and get the client to do a straight swap when
required.

I had this same thought a while ago but never did anything about it, i simply
pulled the drive once the backup was done and it has always been ok. devcon -
didnt know about that, thanks for sharing will take a look.

how do you know (assuming you are not there or able to communicate with the
person responsible for swapping the drives) that the backup has completed?
they might pull it while it is in middle of backup. to help with this you
could attach a task to the event which indicates the backup has completed and
have that task send an email to the user responsible. open up event viewer,
find the event which indicates the backup has completed and select "attach a
task to this log..." from the actions pane.

hope that gives you a little extra info
