I have an Inspiron 530 and it came with two 1G's and a two 512's. I just
replaced one of the 512's with another 1G. Should they match(brands).

Hello Venom,

No, they do not need to be the same brand, but they should be the same
type and have the same speed and timing though. For the best performance
with DDR2 RAM, you should install them in pairs. For example, instead
you would want either 2 sticks installed in the same color slots, or 4
1GB sticks in all 4 slots.

You can read more detailed information about DDR2 at the link below if
you like.

Hope this helps,
Shawn

I just checked and I have two slots with white clips with the factory 1G
chips, the other two are black with the 1G that I installed and the
other was the 512. should I get the other 512 replaced with the same
brand and speed and timing? I know that the 32 bit OS only uses about
3.5 so would the other 1G but just a waist of money?

You might consider going ahead and replacing the other 512MB stick with
the same type as the other one anyway if it does not cost to much. Since
the second set of slots (black) are not the same size, they will prevent
your RAM from function as dual channel and would run in the slower
single channel mode instead.

Is there a way that I can check if it went to single channel?
