3 updates won't download

I can't get the latest 3 updates to isntall-the process fails as the
download doesn't begin at all.
Based on the error message, the problem seems to be the Background
Intellegent Transfer Service isn't running. Any attempt to start the service
fails. I tried the soultions in the post regarding BITS problems bu that
didn't seem to work. Are there any other suggestions?
