What is it about the 4/12/2006 security updates that whacked out my system?
It almost seemed like I wasn’t allowed to look at my own computer using
Windows Explorer.

I’m running Microsoft Windows XP Home Edition SP2 on my Pentium 4, 3.0 GHz,
Medion 8084XL Computer. This afternoon I installed the following
High-priority updates.

Security Update for Windows XP (KB908531)
Cumulative Security Update for Internet Explorer for Windows XP (KB912812)
Security Update for Windows XP (KB911562)
Windows Malicious Software Removal Tool - April 2006 (KB890830)
Cumulative Security Update for Outlook Express for Windows XP (KB911567)

After the installation and reboot, I began to experience a problem with
Windows Explorer. First of all, I use Classic Folders view. I don’t hide
extensions and hidden files are all visible to me. I opened Window Explorer
and the program defaulted to the My Documents folder as always, but when I
clicked on the plus sign (+) to the left of My Computer my problem started.

The plus sign (+) disappeared and an hourglass appeared next to my cursor
and stayed there. Nothing opened. None of my drives were displayed. I just
had a cursor with an hourglass on the Windows Explorer screen.

I clicked on the drop-down arrow of the address line and my drives appeared.
I picked Drive C and it popped up with a plus sign (+) under the My Computer
icon on the left side of the screen. I still had the cursor with the
hourglass. When I clicked on the plus sign (+) for Drive C, the plus sign
(+) disappeared. That’s all I could get it to do.

I tried to close Windows Explorer. I minimized then returned as a blank
window that said “My Documents” in the header. Task Manager showed it as “My
Documents - Not Responding”. I finally ended the task and shut the system
down.

I rebooted the system and it was exactly the same.

I shut it down again and unplugged it from its UPS for well over a minute.
I powered up the system and it was exactly the same.

I opened a DOS window and used the command “SFC.exe /scannow” to check the
protected Windows files. That was uneventful.

Finally, I restored the system to the point named “Software Distribution
2.0”, which was just prior to the installation of the above updates.

Presto!!!!!!!!!!! Everything was back to normal.!!!!

Do you have a HP scanner connected to your machine and installed
the HP scanner software?

And the security holes are still open and "may" be exploited from
the bad boys. IOW: That's *not* a solution anyway!

I am having the same problem as TaxDad and I used the same solution i.e.
System restore. I do have a HP all in one (Copier/printer/scanner) connected
with HP software loaded.. So Are you saing HP scan program is the problem ?
Any idea how to fix this ?

Cheers

I too had to use system restore as this recent update wouldn't allow me
to open, save or do anything in Word, Outlook, or Excel.

I also have an HP g85 attached to this computer...is this what is
causing the problem?

It did look like there's a conjunction. I'm not sure any longer.

To exclude other ideas, I would like you to answer the following
questions:

#1 Which Windows Version with which Service Pack installed is used?

#2 Is MS Office installed? If true, which version of MS Office
(2000, XP, 2003)?

#3 Could you verify whether KB911831 or KB911701 (both MS06-017) is
installed on either the machines in trouble and/or the fine running
ones?

#4 Is ZoneAlarm installed on any machine?

TIA,
Freudi

Freudi

01. WIN XP Home SP2
02. MS Office 2000 installed
03. None of the KB are insatlled
04. No Zone Alarm

I have two machines with the same configuration and operating system except
one is hooked up with the HP all-in-one. The one with HP connected is the
one that have the problem after the update. The other one works fine.

Thanks for sharing, Allen! :-)

I would like to point you to a sudden posting, which confirms the HP
theory. It looks like that's *one* possible cause for the problems
posted oncerning KB908531 (MS05-015), but seems to be not the only one:

Answer: No, I've never had an HP scanner connected to my machine and there
is no HP scanner software on the machine either.

> And the security holes are still open and "may" be exploited from

Answer: Freudi, your right. How silly of me to place my desire for a
working computer ahead of a security threat. I shouldn't have restored my
machine to a working condition. It's far more important to keep those
security holes closed in case the "bad boys" decide to target my machine.
I'm going to reinstall those updates that Microsoft is still pushing out to
the world including KB908531 so that my computer can be a worthless to me as
it will be to the "bad guys". IOW: What planet are you living on?

I had the same exact problem but with XP Pro. I did the same thing to
take care of the problem.
