Well, note that we are assuming, based on your vague symptom
description, that you actually got as far as an install phase.
E.g. if this really is a problem with WU and the failure is during
the download phase an install would not be started so then
there would be no log file. There would also be no log file
if that update uses a different directory to put it in. Etc.
Since you're not sure what is going on you could try finding all
files which are changing during the time the update is run,
e.g. search for all files which changed on that date,
sorting the resulting list by Date Modified, and then scrolling
to the actual minute that it was done. See what diagnostics
you can find that way.
Alternatively, you could try downloading and installing the updates
manually. Then any symptoms you get would be completely
independent of WU. Often you get better diagnostics that way
and sometimes an update installs with no further problem symptoms,
which can then leave you less interested in your original symptoms. ; )
