5 Updates fail with Error Code: 0x80070005 - Other updates install

I am running Windows XP Home Service Pack 3 and was keeping up to date with
updates until about a month ago when Windows Update offered about 10
different Security Updates on one day.

Now, after running Windows Update I keep getting the message that the
following 5 updates have failed to install, even though other updates do
install in the same run.

Security Update for Windows XP (KB975713)
Security Update for Windows XP (KB978037)
Security Update for Windows XP (KB975560)
Security Update for Windows XP (KB977914)
Security Update for Windows XP (KB978706)

All these updates fail with Error Code: 0x80070005

I have noticed that none of these updates are ever downloaded automatically
and all of them need to be downloaded first. All other updates that do
install are automatically downloaded to my computer, if I check using the
custom install option.

I have tried the following:
Install and run the Windows Genuine Advantage Diagnostic Tool
Checked the KBxxxxx.LOG files for problems
Install and run the latest Windows Genuine Advantage Notification Tool
(Which reports I have a genuine copy of Windows)
Run the Malicious Software Removal Tool (twice)
Install and Run Windows Defender (which reports no problems)
Run CHKDSK/F at startup.
Uninstall (almost) all Symantec/Norton Antivirus software - (the Live Update
icon in the control panel won't uninstall.)
Checked that these updates have correctly installed on another XP-SP3
computer (They have).
Stopped the update service and reregistered the dll mentioned in KB943144
Tried to install these updates separately, or just one at a time.

None of these have been successful. What else can I do?

(Note: Migrating to Windows 7 is not an option for this computer.)

I sort of gathered that. When I Google searched, I found commentary around
the error code suggested to me that access was being denied because something
had stopped Update recognising I had a genuine version of windows.

This is a new problem that had a sudden onset when I was offed these 5
Security Updates as part of a batch of 10-12 updates that were issued in
February 2010. The other updates all downloaded and installed. These 5 failed
then and continue to fail, even though other updates released after them are
downloaded and installed.

I purchased my computer in 2002 with Norton 2002 preinstalled. That ran
successfully being kept up to date until around 2007 when my subscription ran
out and I could no longer renew it without upgrading/paying for a new
antivirus application. (I have an aversion to pre-planned software
obsolescence.) It would still run though on the expired subsription -
apparently. Then in late 2009 I acquired a new computer and a copy of McAfee,
so attempted to uninstall Norton 2002 as a first step installing McAfee.
While it seemed to uninstall the base Norton software, other Norton (Live
Update)/Symantic components were not uninstalled, and I only removed those
yesterday. There is still a Norton Live Update icon in the control panel,
even though I now appear to have no Norton/Symantic applications installed as
Programs. When I click the Icon it says that it is an "Applet" to control
the setup of live update and gives a dialog box that allows me to adjust
parameters like the check for updates frequency.

I currently only have Microsoft Defender running. It was last updated
successfully yesterday via Windows Update. It appears active and has detected
changes made to the computer today (since posting the problem) while
attempting to run Microsoft Fix It 50202 - to see if resetting Windows
Upgrade components will assist.

I have had Lavasoft AdAware 2.5 installed. But the subscription has expired
and rather than upgrade to the new version I installed Windows Defender.

I am using the Windows Firewall, only. No other firewall is installed.

I am not aware of any other Norton or McAfee application being installed. I
may have run a McAfee installer from memory stick but stopped the
installation when I realised that Norton needed to be removed first. (I
cannot be certain as I may have run McAffee on another computer with Norton
installed and realised I had to remove Norton before installing McAfee.)

I realise that I am running a computer that is vulnerable to infection by
malware. However, I have watched the processes running in Task Manager and
checked out anything I thought suspicious. I have also checked System
Information for running tasks/processes - which is how I discovered Live
Update was still running. I have set the Security Settings of Internet
Explorer to prompt me for pretty much everything a website might do in the
Internet Zone, (some might think it annoying and that I am paranoid). and
only have a few Trusted websites, like my bank and Microsoft Update. I have
generally avoided installing software I don't know much about. Though after
I had problems with an application I downloaded, about a year ago, I went
back and removed the downloaded file and checked my machine for possible
infection by even checking the registry to ensure program keys and other
references to the application were not present. Nobody else uses my
computer, so I don't think it is currently infected by malware - though I
cannot be certain of that.

Use these uninstall tools from Symantec and then the one from MaCafee and then post
back with result

Thanks, Peter, for those links, they will be helpful removing the rest of my
unwanted anti-virus software, before I install some again!

However, they do not address the root cause of the problem with Windows
Update. I have found a solution after reading KB971058 - How do I reset
Windows Update components? I ran Microsoft Fix It 50202 and then shutdown and
restarted my computer. Once I did that the updates immediately started
downloading and I will now try to install them using Custom Update, where I
can see the 5 updates have all been downloaded and are ready to install. It
probably means I will have to restart my computer again, so will be offline
for a while.

From there I ran Microsoft Fix It 50202 at

After shutdown and restart Automatic Update started to downloaded the 5
security updates almost immediately. Custom updates on the Windows Update
website now show the files have been downloaded and are now ready to install.

Windows Defender is NOT an anti-virus application.

The success you apprently have had after doing a Reset per KB971058 is
likely to be short-lived if you do not have a valid, functional &
fully-updated anti-virus application installed!
