Automatic Updates as in AU in the Control Panel and NOT the Automatic
Update service, correct ?
Is Windows Installer 3.1 installed yet ? If not, suggest you install
that by itself, restart the system, and then see if multiple updates can
be installed.

If it is installed already and/or installing it does not resolve the
issue, let's give this a shot ... open the Services console
Start > Run > type in
services.msc
Click OK or press Enter
Stop the Automatic Update service; leave the Services console open
Show hidden files, folders, and system files :

Using Windows Explorer, navigate to WINDOWS\SoftwareDistribution
Open the Download subfolder and *delete all contents*
Open the EventCache subfolder and *delete all contents*
Close Windows Explorer
Empty the Recycle Bin
In the Services console, Start the AU service
Download the latest version of the Windows Update Agent and save it:
http://download.windowsupdate.com/v7...gent30-x86.exe
Close the browser and any other open programs
Now run WindowsUpdateAgent30-x86.exe
*IF* a message appears stating that the Update Agent is already
installed, then go to Start > Run > click the Browse button
Navigate to where WindowsUpdateAgent30-x86.exe was saved and click once
on it
Click the Open button
In the Open: line, click once on WindowsUpdateAgent30-x86.exe
It should now be highlighted in blue
Click once after the last quotation mark "
Push the Space Bar on the keyboard and enter /wuforce
The entry should now look like this
"C:\<locationoffile>\WindowsUpdateAgent30-x86.exe" /wuforce
Note the space after the last quotation mark and the /
Click OK or press Enter
Next, download, save, close the browser, and install KB927891
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/927891
If you're prompted to restart the system, do so.
If no joy, then please state which antivirus/security suite is
installed ?
