76 updates that I can't install

I had help this morning (8/23/07 9:51 a.m. PST) from this newsgroup when my
Windows Update was stuck at trying to install Windows Installer 3.1. I got
Installer 3.1 to install and Windows update then listed 76 other updates I
need.

Problem is, none of these 76 updates will install.
I then tried just installing the first three - no success.
Tried installing just the first in the list - no success.
Tried installing from the MS update webpage - it downloaded the files but
couldn't install.

I tried what someone said in another thread worked for him - set Windows
Update to automatically download and install.
I did that (set it to automatically DL and install at 2 p.m. PST) but I
still have that huge bunch of updates waiting to be installed.

Should I post all the entries in Windowsupdate.log since 2 p.m. PST today.
It's very very long.

Also tried downloading the first update KB886185 from the MS webpage
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/d...displaylang=en.

Rebooted.

Tried Windows Update ===> couldn't install updates

Ran Dial-a-Fix in Safe mode
Rebooted.
82 hotfixes installed successfully.

There was just one hotfix that didn't install - KB928366 Security update for
Microsoft.NET Framework version 1.1 SP1

Do I need this? It says SP1 and my XP Pro is SP2.

If windows updates fail to install;

First of all make sure your Time is set correct on your Computer ( you will
find in the Right-bottom of the screen).

Open a run command and try to Re-register these DLLs for the update Engine:
net stop wuauserv click [OK]
regsvr32 wuapi.dll click [OK]
regsvr32 wuweb.dll click [OK]
regsvr32 atl.dll click [OK]
regsvr32 wups2.dll click [OK]
regsvr32 wuaueng1.dll click [OK]
regsvr32 wups.dll click [OK]
regsvr32 MSXML3.dll click [OK]
regsvr32 wucltui.dll click [OK]

Also Turn any firewall and Defender off for the Update (please turn ON after

update either success or failure) Then Reboot your machine and try the
Updates.

You receive an access violation error and the system may appear to become
unresponsive when you try to install an update from Windows Update or from
Microsoft Update

'repair' itself in Safe Mode, then it's reasonable to theorize that the
Services/Protections of said AV that *may* have caused this issue do NOT
Run or do not exist when the OS is booted to Safe Mode.

Until you can ascertain what the cause was, it will occur again.

Since there is ALSO an issue installing the Security update for .NET
Framework 1.1, the most likely cause for BOTH issues is the

have caused this issue do NOT Run or do not exist when the OS is booted to

Matty - I cannot conclude that the system was able to repair itself because
it was in Safe Mode because I never tried running Dial-a-Fix in Normal mode.
I simply followed the instructions in Engel's link which said that CClean
and Fix-a-Dial should be ran in Safe mode. After running Dial-a-Fix in Safe
mode, I then rebooted then ran Windows Update while in Normal mode.

I'm reading through the links that you gave and also looking at the posts
of several other people who also cannot install KB928366.

seems to be relevant his description coincides with what I have in my compu.
I have Microsoft.NET Framework 2.0 and 3.0. I don't have 1.0 or 1.1.

So, it would seem that I have to uninstall 2.0 and 3.0; install 1.1 then
install the security update for 1.1; then proceed with re-installing 2.0 and
3.0 and their security updates.

Question
- Do I need all Microsoft.NET Framework versions? I do not know the
difference among these three versions. I don't even know if they are
"versions" or if they are completely different programs.

Each .NET Framework runs side by side with the others ... in plain
English, that means that their *totally* independent of each other.
There is no need to install .NET Framework 3 if .NET Framework 1.1 is
installed. Whichever application/program that requires the Framework
will notify you of that requirement.

KB928366 is *specific* to .NET Framework 1.1 SP1 *ONLY*.

Try to *uninstall any* update specific to that .NET Framework 1.1 SP1 as
the first step.
MS offers a: Uninstall Cleanup Tool for the .NET Framework 1.0 and .NET
Framework 1.1 updates KB928366, KB929729, and KB928367

Than try to uninstall .NET Framework 1.1 SP1
Next, uninstall .NET Framework 1.1

Run the Automated Removal Tool *if* there are any issues removing any of
the above:

Download, save, and than reinstall .NET Framework 1.1 first -

I have .NET Framework 3 presumably because Windows Update identified it
before (I don't know when) as an update that I should be installing.

Anyhoo, I finally was able to install KB928366 Security update for
Microsoft.NET Framework version 1.1 SP1.
I wish Microsoft would have specific error messages pop up when an update
doesn't install.
Something like this would have been really useful: "Well, duh, you can't
install KB928366 if you don't have MS.NET Framework 1.1 SP1." he he he

Couldn't follow your advice below Mow because, as I previously mentioned, I
didn't have .NET Framework 1.1 nor 1.0. There's no 1.1 to uninstall. And,
because I didn't have 1.1, I also do not have 1.1 updates to uninstall.

I thought I could take a shortcut and just install .NET Framework 1.1 and
..NET Framework SP1 to then install KB928366. But no, I still could't
install this Hotfix.

So, I had to go through the long process outlined by
's

I did all these (took hours!!!) while compu was in Normal mode with Windows
Firewall, Defender, and NOD32 on.

1. Uninstalled .NET Framework 2.0 and 3.0 and their security updates --- I
used both Add/Remove and the Windows Intaller Cleanup.
2. Also ran .Net Framework 1.0, 1.1 and 2.0 cleanup tool
(http://astebner.sts.winisp.net/Tools...eanup_tool.zip)

Note - I tried to stick to the reboot after each uninstall but I sometimes
"cheated" and risked missing a few reboots. Patience is not one of my
computer virtues.

3. Installed Microsoft.NET Framework 1.1 - rebooted
4. Installed Microsoft.NET Framework 1.1 SP1 - rebooted
5. Installed KB928366 - yeheyyy!!!! finally!!! - rebooted

Then installed the two other .NET Framework versions because they were in my
list of installed programs before.
6. Installed Microsoft.NET Framework 2.0 - rebooted
7. Installed KB928365 (security update for MS.NET Framework 2.0) - rebooted
8. Installed Microsoft.NET Framework 3.0 - rebooted

And now, all is well with my Windows Update.
I then installed the two other hotfixes queued in Windows Update: KB873374
and KB885884.
MS Update didn't find and list any more updates that need to be installed.

Thank you for everyone's suggestions! (Whatever would I do without these
forums?!)

Now, the only problem remaining is my nonfunctional System Restore (which
was functioning well just before I upgraded to XP Pro). If anyone can help
me with this, please go to the windowsxp.general forum and share your
suggestions - (posted 8/23/07 10:10 a.m. PST - System restore not working).
