Greetings,

This is usually Flash. Updating to the latest flash beta should fix this:

Greetings,

Can you please look in your event viewer for Windows Live Messenger, and
email me the data in the error log for that crash event.

Greetings,

It actually took me ages to get this to work myself as the installer is not very intelligent
and does not notify you when it doesn't work. With all Internet Explorer windows shut down,
go to the Control Panel, then Programs, and then Programs and Features (or just Programs and
Features if you're in classic mode).

Then, in the search field at the top type flash and wait to see if there are any results.
Click each that are Macromedia Flash and choose Uninstall for each one.

Next, click the Start button, type cmd.exe and press Enter. At the command line type:
cd %systemroot%\system32\Macromed\Flash
and press Enter.

Now type:
uninstfl
and press Enter. If there's anything to remove it will prompt you to uninstall Flash, say
Yes or OK. If this fails or doesn't exist, continue on.

Next type:
dir
and press Enter. See if flash9.ocx is there. It shouldn't be, but flash9b.ocx should.

Now just type:
regsvr32 flash9b.ocx
and press Enter. You should get a message saying it succeeded. Now try Messenger again.

You are the man! That fixed it. AIM was keeping a lock on the old 9.0 flash,
so the un-installer was being stupid. Thanks to sysinternals tools that found
AIM was keeping the old version around. Messenger now appears to be working
properly. Why on EARTH does MS rely on Flash for their product? Dump that
Adobe junk please....I can't stand that company!

Hi,

Yeah I'm not surprised, that beta installer is terrible. Flash is used for the winks,
dynamic display pictures, ads and goodness knows what else. There really isn't another
solution for what they want to do (besides creating their own technology like the old
Microsoft Liquid Motion) so I think we're stuck with it.

Could be worse, it could be RealPlayer...

Just a note that the fix works for Vista RC1 as well. But for x64 systems the
directory is different:

cd %systemroot%\SysWOW64\system32\Macromed\Flash

I had a problem where the regsvr32 failed so I simply re-installed the Flash
player again as Administrator.
