8.1 Final Crashes Every Time in Vista

Hi everyone,

I upgraded from Windows XP to Windows Vista Home Premium yesterday and
everything is running perfectly except for Windows Live Messenger. Every
time I start Windows Live Messenger, it logs in and displays my contacts
perfectly and then crashes five seconds later with a "Windows Live Messenger
has stopped working" message, forcing me to close the program. Every time,
without fail, it crashes in about five seconds. Is anyone else having this
problem and does anyone know of a fix?

Thank you,

Rocky

I have exactly the same problem Rocky, and have already posted a thread for
this. So far the only suggested solution has been to verify you have the
latest version of flash, which I have. It is still not working and I have not
found a solution. I suspect we will see more people with this issue now that
Vista has hit the shops.

Greetings,

In the dialog that appears when it crashes, can you click the Details "arrow" and copy/paste
the first 10 lines or so?

I cannot see any Details arrow. Five seconds after my contacts appear a
dialogue box appears that says:

Windows Live has stopped working

Windows is checking for a solution to the problem...

Cancel

When the progress bar finishes, the message changes to:

Windows Live has stopped working

A problem caused the program to stop working correctly.
Windows will close the program and notify you if a solution is
available.

Close Program

Windows Live Messenger closes when I click the Close Program button and no
notification of a solution appears. Are there any log files that might help
me give you more information?

OK, I think I've figured it out. Messenger is crashing whenever it tries to
open the Welcome to Messenger window. Is there a registry entry I can change
to stop it loading this unnecessary window?

I solved it! I downloaded msvcr71.dll from
http://www.dll-files.com/dllindex/dl....shtml?msvcr71 and put it in
C:\windows\system32. Windows Live Messenger 8.1 appears to be working
perfectly now. When I restarted the computer, the Today window appeared,
which didn't happen before.

Great news for you Rocky, and well done on finding a fix.
Your description of the problem is identical to mine - I also get this on
the Welcome to Messenger window, maybe 5 seconds (or less) after it opens.
And like you, I have no 'Details' button, just the Close Program.

The bad news is that installing the later version of msvcr71 has not fixed
my problem. I used your link, downloaded the file, and copied it into the
Windows/System32 directory. I had trouble replacing the older version (which
was apparently in use), but windows allowed me to rename it, and then I was
able to copy the new file in, and then delete the old version. I have
rebooted, and checked that I have the latest (2004) version of the DLL, which
I have. Unfortunately I get exactly the same error we discussed.

ANy ideas on another fix, or alternatively did you find a way to stop that
extra screen popping up?

I found the checkbox to disable the Windows Live Today window after I got
Messenger working again. Unfortunately, the checkbox does not appear until
after you have signed in. That means you have got only five seconds to go to
Tools-->Options-->General, uncheck the checkbox fourth from the top "Show
Windows Live Today after I sign in to Messenger" and then click OK. If you
press Alt, T, O, Shift+Tab, Down Arrow, Alt+N, and then Enter in less than
five seconds, you might be able to disable the window before Messenger
crashes, although this could be difficult. I've search through the Messenger
entries in the registry, but can't find any obvious way to uncheck the box
using the registry. Good luck.

Didn't work for me i'm afraid . My messenger was working fine with the Live
Today turned off until suddenly it started playing up.It doesn't crash after
5 seconds either but it does crash as soon as i select anything else on
screen that isn't the messenger?
Any ideas?

Thanks

I gave it a go, and after many attempts (20 or so) I have discovered that my
system crashes before that checkbox is ever enabled. I practised so I could
get fast enough to sit hovering over the checkbox, but it never gives me a
chance. I crash immediately the Live Today window appears.

I'm fascinated as to why the dll fix worked for you (with an identical
problem) and yet hasn't helped me. I do wonder if I have another dll that
needs updating somewhere...
