8.1 Messenger So upset Never will upgrade again

I foolishly hit upgrade and since then I have no MSN Messenger at all. I
uninstall the previous ones. Installed. It won't sign me in at all. Then I
uninstall and click on download and now it tells me I must have Windows XP or
greater ...........well boys and girls I have Windows XP Service Pack 2. The
only way I can IM is by using Web Messenger. This is ridiculous it really is.
Ill never ever upgrade again. It's not worth the pain in the neck. Any ideas
how to get my IM back without throwing out the computer?

I did download 7.0 like I was instructed another time however it won't sign
me in there either . Gives me the error message 80072efd
