Is there ever any particularly good reason to dissable "8.3 name creation"
on windows 2008? Even with 300,000 - 400,000 files in a directory, I haven
not been able to get a performance difference between the two settings.
Assuming each file is atlest 1MB in size, is there any real additional
wear and tear on the hard drive when "8.3 name creation" is enabled?

The directories need both LFN and generated SFN entries. It probably mattered 15 years ago.
You get spurious results from SFNs when you do "dir h???????.*".
