Hello 8.5 beta users!

Back in June we sent out an update to the 8.5 Beta client through Microsoft
Update to test sending updates through that channel. We're investigating how
well MU did at getting that update to users, and we need your help. If
anyone has NOT gotten the update from MU, can you send me a log file? I'm
looking for the file windowsupdate.log, which is in the Windows directory of
your machine. Unless you installed Windows in another directory, the file
will be in C:/Windows/windowsupdate.log. Please also let me know what OS
you're running and your MU settings (Install automatically, download but let
me choose when to install, etc.)

If you're unsure if you got the update, check Help -> About Messenger for
the build number. 8.5.1235.0517 is the original build. If you're running
that build, I'd like to see your windowsupdate.log file. If you're running
build 8.5.1238.0601, you got the patch and I don't need to see your log
file.

You can send the file and info to me at .

Thanks in advance!
Jura

Hello,

I'm glad that you stay in direct contact with the end user!
May I ask a few things:

- Is there actually a feature list which new things will be included into
8.5?
- Will we have to wait long until it will be released?
- Is there additional info about 8.5?

Greetings,
P. Di Stolfo

Well I got the update.

Doesn't Microsoft use the Customer Experience Improvement Program to see
what number of users got the update? That's the simplest thing, than
"knocking" every users door and asking!

Hi Stratis,

Yes, we know how many people are running each build. What we don't know is:
of the people who are still on the original build, why haven't they
upgraded? Is it because they haven't gotten the update, because they got it
but chose not to upgrade, because they tried to upgrade and the install
failed? We're hoping the log file will help us understand these questions.

Thanks

The changes in 8.5 are mostly around the install experience as part of our
move toward the Windows Live suite you may have heard about. If you haven't
heard, you'll hear more soon. There are also some changes to the look and
feel of the client and of course some bugfixes.

I can't comment on release dates, sorry.

Jura.. the last installer you guys used for live applications
was horrible to say the least. Im not talking about bugs alone that of
course we all know what they are..
Im talking about the way the installer works, the time it takes to install
and the way it displays the installation process to the user.

It also installs a SERVICE for crying out loud.. this is scary....

sorry to be so abrupt but perhaps by clearly stating my opinion in this
fashion my message will get accross and not be ignored

Thanks for your reply Jura,
I got the update from Windows Update right after installing WLM ( maybe
rebooting) and checking for updates. My setting include getting recommended
updates and updates for other Microsoft products. Maybe these are the
settings that affect whether people get the update or not.
Actually updating WLM through Windows Update and not having to install the
whole program for this purpose is a great convenience at least for security
and minor updates!
Thanks
Stratis

Hi Jura,

I read that Microsoft is abandoning Windows Mail. And Windows Live is
coming out with a replacement for Windows Mail.

Windows Live Mail and Windows Mail can't co-exist. Will Windows Live
Mail have the use of Identities, so one doesn't need to create a new User
ID, in order to save E-mails by years? Example thecreator 2006 and
thecreator 2007.

I set up Outlook Express in this fashion.
