The wlinstaller.exe worked for me, I now have version 8.5.1288.816 .

The servers may be a little slow at the moment, an early rush, or not
yet fully provisioned?

My only slight worry was that doing an upgrade as I was, it first said
it was uninstalling the old version first, it then moved on & there was
a long delay as it presumably waited for the servers. I do hope it had
done the right thing (TM) and at least downloaded the files for the new
one before removing the old :-)

Greetings Dave,

I found the install quite slow but it had nothing to do with the servers as the installation
had already downloaded.

The previous beta installer was slow too so it didn't surprise me that much.

At home, where I have automatic updates turned off, it had trouble
downloading the stuff from the internet, and errored a few times because of
that. On the third try, I think, it worked though, and I have the new beta
running at home.

At work though, it loads, it sits, it tries and tries and tries, and then
gives the error "There was a problem downloa..." on both Sign In Assistant
and Messenger (I don't want anything else in the suite). I can't make the
window any bigger to make it display the full message. I then get "There was
a problem with this installati...", and a useless link to
http://help.live.com/help.aspx?proje...=rorre_lareneg

It may very well be because of the proxies and whatnot involved at work.
Does the installer read the proxy from Internet Explorer, or does it not work
with proxies?

At any rate, I can't install because it can't download. Web Installers are
the stupidest idea ever. With a real installer, I could upgrade; with this
garbage I can't.

Suggestions would be helpful.

Serge,

I agree, I've been trying and trying and I always end up with some error
message (0x80240022 - it shows you when you hover over the error message).

Now when I search on that error, it mostly takes me to Windows Defender
error pages which surely has little to do with Messenger right?

Im hoping the installation will be patched some time soon so more users can
actually enjoy the new messenger.

Cheers, Nathan

I was actually getting a similar error when I tried to use Microsoft Update
around the same time. Googling that error, I came up with a couple of things
to try (such as going to a prompt, and typing proxycfg -u to make sure that
the IE proxy was actually being seen everywhere in Windows, blahblahblah.

In the end, I was able to make Messenger install (no luck on MS Update
yet...), it just took bloody forever. It took a good 25 minutes at the
'searching for installed components' (or whatever the exact text of that is)
portion, and then 10 minutes claiming to download but not, and then 20
minutes downloading, and then another half hour installing.

I don't know about that. I have been evaluating the Windows Desktop Search,
and it hasn't plagued me with any problems. Not Live Search, though...

No. I did not install Live Photos. I already have HP Photosmart Premier, so
I figured that I didn't need it.

Hello Jonathan,

I also notice that the Installer of WLM is very very slow... I notice
that CPU usage is 100%. I think the problem is that the Installer of
WLM 8.5 Beta activates (without asking us....) the Microsoft Update to
replace Windows Update. And as we know, Microsoft Update has a
well-known bug : it uses 100% of the CPU resources when trying to get
the list of updates, and sometimes for long long (very too long)
minutes !...
So I guess that if the WLM Installer is so slow, it is linked to the
activation of Microsoft Update during the installation process of WLM.

Personnaly, after installation of WLM 8.5, I deactivate Microsoft
Update to return to Windows Update because Windows Update works fine !

Regards,

Steph

Hi Serge,

I still have the same errors. Installation just fails during "Checking for
installed components". Not sure why though since the error logging is not
that detailed...

My computer has Windows Update disabled since its a company computer and the
updates are coming from a central server. Maybe thats the whole issue.

Im starting to wonder how badly I want this new version. This is taking me
too much time...

Regards, Nathan
