Hello David E,
This should answer your first question: <http://www.microsoft.com/protect/computer/updates/mu.mspx> Windows Update updates Windows and core components [i.e. Windows Defender, Windows Media Player, Windows Messenger, etc.] Microsoft Update offers updates for all MS software that is installed plus Windows and core components. [i.e. MS Office, Windows LIVE Messenger, Windows LIVE Mail (or whatever it's called today),etc.] Look here for the second question: <http://www.microsoft.com/communities/newsgroups/en-us/default.aspx?&query=0x80070002&lang=en&cr=US&guid= &sloc=en-us&dg=microsoft.public.windowsupdate&p=1&tid=420f6 ca4-67e2-4c93-89c8-1a9261e73431&mid=420f6ca4-67e2-4c93-89c8-1a9261e73431> OR here: <http://www.microsoft.com/communities/newsgroups/en-us/default.aspx?query=0x80070002&dg=microsoft.public. windowsupdate&cat=en_US_56d1dd45-de9e-4fc5-9bc1-2d1d0de6daee&lang=en&cr=US&pt=&catlist=&dglist=&pt list=&exp=&sloc=en-us> I hope this is enough to get you on the right road for nºw. Hi, Thanks for the clarification re: the 2 update sites. So why is it that a
problem with the MICROSOFT site gets refered by MS to the WINDOWS discussion group? Is there a MU discussion group? I had seen and tried the ideas suggested in the first link you provided below. Though I wish that PABear had been more specific about "Keep rreading," jh001 had been clear about exactly what was "Outstanding." Basically I'm still trying random shots at trying to fix this problem. The problem seems to be with the MUWebControlClass activix control. When it is enabled I get the error message; when it is disabled the yellow IE Information bar is disabled. Either way, there is no accessing the MU site. I've also noticed that when I use the "Find solutions" link, the "Select and operating System" drop down menu does NOT include Vista. So I'm wondering if there is a mismatch somewhere between my actual OS and what is being communicated to MU. I'm not a techie so am just guessing. Thanks for responding. Hi PA Bear,
Thanks for the speifics :-). I've checked out KB956698 and tried that. Did not fix the problem. KB910336 does not apply because the error occurs when first accessing the Update site: "The website has encountered a problem and cannot display the page you are trying to view." Since I'm using Vista SP1, I'm hesitating to try the third option. I was interested to see the article about virus scanning. Who knew? I use NIS 2008, I'd assume they'd be aware of this and make the exclusions themselves. In any case, as best as I could figure out what was needed, I made the suggested exclusions. This did not fix the problem. I've started an MS incident request. If they come up with a fix I'll post it here. David. IN RE KB956698: Logged on as Administrator, you might try renaming or
deleting %system%\SoftwareDistribution <=this folder (typically C:\SoftwareDistribution). NB: Doing so will have the affect of clearing your Update History but it may resolve the issue, most likely caused by NAV's monitoring/scanning of the the folder. NB: Installing Vista SP1 manually (vs via Windows Update) and/or neglecting to disable all NIS processes & Services prior to installing SP1 may have caused this problem. I'm beginning to think this whole Update error thing is pointless, since I've
just gone to the MS Office site to see if the updating from that site worked, and the info there is that for Vista users the WINDOWS Update site now has all updates. The update link on the Office site goes to the Windows Update site, not the Microsoft Update site (which seems to be for XP and 2000 only). [I hope you didn't miss my previous reply, David.]
See this tutorial: http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/tuto...torial140.html If the "Get updates for more products" option illustrated in Figure 1 is available, click on it. Doing so will make your Microsoft Update your default update source so that Automatic Updates (or running Windows Update manually) will offer updates for MS Office and most Windows Live applications. If that option isn't available, Microsoft Update is already your default update source. Vista users cannot use Windows Update or Microsoft Update websites. More here: http://www.microsoft.com/windows/dow...dowsvista.mspx -- ~PA Bear David E wrote: > I'm beginning to think this whole Update error thing is pointless, since > I've just gone to the MS Office site to see if the updating from that site > worked, and the info there is that for Vista users the WINDOWS Update site > now has all updates. Sorry for the delay in responding to your helpful comments ... (I have read
all of them) I'm confused by your statement: > Vista users cannot use Windows Update or Microsoft Update websites. More > here: Isn't that link about how Vista users CAN use those sites? I have set the Vista Windows Update (from the Start Menu) to use Microsoft Update, and that seems to be working fine. The problem I ran into is when I tried to use the link to Microsoft Update in the email bulletin, Microsoft Download Notifications. Should you attempt to access http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com, Start | Windows Update will open. IOW you won't be taken to the webpage that WinXP and earlier would.
