80070017 error code on Vista Home Premium SP3 update

The install fails. I have tried emptying the temp folders and cleaning the
system, all in safe mode. I have tried agressively removing the update
history (using the Microsoft 'do it for me' program, which worked) to reset
the update system, and getting updates all over again, but nothing has
worked. This is a Sony x64 machine. Would appreciate any help getting

Hi Phil,

Perhaps some maintenance, try running the "chkdsk /r"

Check Disk or Chkdsk is disk error checking in VISTA.

It can be used to check for corruption and possibly repair errors and bad
sectors on the hard drive.

Run SFC /SCANNOW
System File Checker (SFC) checks that all Vista files are where they should
be and that they are uncorrupted.
WHY: You want to ensure that core operating system files have not been
damaged or modified.

My Vista HP is SP2 and supposedly up-to-date. Where do you get this SP3
from?
