I've been recieving the error code recently while trying to update. Now, I've
read the support article that seems to be working for everyone, but not for
me. I've flushed the DNS, there were no hosts files to remove, and now I've
tried the command prompt (running in administrator mode as well). Yet, when
type in 'proxycfg-d' I get a message back that says 'proxycfg-d is not
recognized as an internal or external command, operable program, or batch
file'. I've tried typing it different ways and no matter what, it gives me
the same message. Any different workaround for this problem?

Of course that article won't work for Vista.
Now you know why it is important you mention what Windows Version you are using.

If you are not using the Windows Firewall and are using a 3rd party Firewall, make sure
that these sites are in your exceptions/allow list -
http://*.update.microsoft.com
https://*.update.microsoft.com
http://download.windowsupdate.com

If that doesn't help then -

Start a free Windows Update support incident request:
https://support.microsoft.com/oas/de...spx?gprid=6527

If we are in a Vista support newsgroup, shouldn't it be obvious I'm using
Vista?
And I'm behind Windows Firewall only, unless avast antivirus could be
hindering it too?

You are being misled by the UI in web page that you are using into thinking that.
The last 4 items in the list are *NOT* Vista-specific newsgroups.
They are common to other OS and this one in particular is common to all OS.

If you are using Avast's web scanner proxy, definitely.

Depends from where you are accessing the NG (from here it looks like it's for Windows XP)
http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/e...&lang=en&cr=US

In other words, this NG is for all Windows versions.
