first, I apologize for an empty response. I've been having the same problem
since august 8th. I've tried contacting ms support on several occassions. the
result: a sting of logged emails and six suggestions later there is no
change. How outdated is my windows security update? i'm afraid to think about
it. thinking of using my system warranty to have them come out to fix it for
me. in the end, my case was closed due to spyware threat on my puter. I've
taken care of that a month ago and still I receive the same error message.
it's an unforgivable fluke.

Hi

Some trouble shooting step for error 0x80072EFD here (I would think
the most likely cause for your error is a Proxy/Firewall configuration
error):

When accessing the Windows Update site, you receive the 0x80072EFD error.
http://v5.windowsupdate.microsoft.co...cleid=16&ln=en

You should also try the steps here:

When searching for available updates on the Windows Update site, you
receive the 0x8024402C, 0x80240030 or 0x8024502d error.
http://v5.windowsupdate.microsoft.co...cleid=26&ln=en

You might need to use proxycfg.exe (see link above) to either set
or remove a proxy server configuration:

Open a command prompt (Start/Run and then "cmd.exe" without the
quotes").

Run this command to see what proxy configuration WU uses:

proxycfg

If you don't have a proxy, you will need status

Direct access (no proxy server).

If it reports anything else, to set direct access:

proxycfg -d

To get more help on proxycfg:

proxycfg -?

Anyway, I suggest you use the full SP2 installer instead of
Windows Update to install SP2.

SP2 is available at the Microsoft Download Center
(standalone "network" version, 266 MB):

http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/d...5-9e368d3cdb5a

(disregard the "intended for IT professionals and developers" part,
it can be used on a single computer as well)

If you do not have broadband at home, but you have at work or you have
friends that have it, you can download it there and burn it to a CD.

If you think that the download is to large, you can get the same file
on a CD from Microsoft (a lot of computer magazines currently also
have the CD included).

The Windows XP SP2 CD order point:
http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/d...s/default.mspx

For folders you can consider deleting and other disk cleanup tips
after a successful SP2 installation, take a look here:

http://groups.google.com/groups?selm...TNGP15.phx.gbl

Before installing SP2, you should take a look at the
following sites:

What to Know Before You Download and Install Windows XP Service Pack 2

How to successfully install Windows XP Service Pack 2.
http://www.fixyourwindows.com/winxpsp2install.htm

Service Pack Installation Checklist
http://www3.telus.net/dandemar/spackins.htm

Please take a look at this Microsoft knowledge base article as well:

Windows XP Service Pack 2 is not available to install from Windows
Update and is not offered by Automatic Updates
http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=885627

*Important* part from the link above:

If you have T.V. Media from Total Velocity Corporation installed, or
your processor is a Intel P4 Prescott with C-0 stepping, you should
not install SP2.

Intel P4 Prescott processors came out February 2004, so if your
computer is older than that, this is not an issue for you. Also, if
you have a Dell, IBM or HP, this is not an issue.

If you suspect/know you have an Intel P4 Prescott processor, take a
look at the two following Web sites for what you need to do/have to
be able to install SP2 on the computer:

http://forum.aumha.org/viewtopic.php?t=7447
http://cquirke.mvps.org/sp2intel.htm

Newsflash:

Adware T.V. Media Program Removal Tool
http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=886590

and

Microsoft have now released a fix for the problem where SP2 fails to
boot after installing it in a PC with the Prescott or a Celeron D CPU
(or fails to install in the case of slipstreamed cds). The problem is
described here:

http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?linkid=34535

and the download for the fix is available here (install it before you
install SP2):

http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/d...DisplayLang=en

Also, if you have a Dell Dell Inspiron 1150 or 2650, you might get a
slow running system after installing SP2, take a look at this thread
for more on this:

Hi

I had the same problem but found this in one of the other messages hope it
helps:-

Here is how I was able to work around the problem.
Using command prompt
1. proxycfg -d (to clear proxy cache)
2. net stop wuauserv (to stop Automatic updates service)

Using Windows Explorer
3. Delete all files and folders in
C:\WINDOWS\SoftwareDistribution (your windows folder may vary)

Again using command prompt
4. net start wuauserv (to start Automatic updates service)

Try now going back to Windows Update web page."

It worked for me! :-)

"Oxon",

I am sorry you are running into this issue. The problem here is that the
database is being corrupted *after* one single install of Windows Update,
and this happens again and again on your system. We have identified several
3rd party applications that cause this error, but essentially this is what
happens:

1. You delete the SoftwareDistribution folder
2. You successfully install from Windows Update
3. As Windows Update writes to the database the outcome of the installation,
a 3rd party application corrupts this entry.

then...

4. You attempt to contact WindowsUpdate again.
5. You scan for updates and everything is ok, so far.
6. You start to install updates, and fail.
7. You check the log, and get an error such as 80072F78.
This happens because while scanning for the updates your machine needs, it
forms a header in HTTP to perform a GET request. This request does not make
it to the appropriate destination in Windows Update, because the corrupted
entry becomes part of that header.

Try the following potential identification procedure:
1. Click Start
2. Click Run
3. Type: msconfig
4. Type <Enter> or click OK
5. When this window opens, click on the Services tab.
6. Check the checkbox at the bottom: "Hide all Microsoft Services"
7. Please DO leave checked any antivirus software you might be running.
8. Uncheck all software other than antivirus (this is ONLY for a test, so
there will be no need for a firewall other than Windows Firewall, as you
will only be visiting the Windows Update website during this period)
9. Click OK, but do not reboot immediately.
10. Go in and delete the SoftwareDistribution folder in the %windir%
directory.
a. Click Start
b. Click Run
c. Type: cmd
d. Type <Enter> or click OK
e. When the command prompt opens, within it type: cd %windir% <Enter>
f. Type: net stop wuauserv <Enter>. Wait for automatic updates
service to stop
g. Type: rd /s /q SoftwareDistribution <Enter>
h. Type: exit <Enter>
11. Please go to the Windows Update website an install a single update. We
will assume this succeeds.
12. Reboot the machine.
13. After reboot, all services other than Microsoft and the antivirus should
be turned off.
14. Please try Windows Update again, and see if you can install an update or
not.

Please let us know the results of that attempt. If it fails, do you get the
same error?

15. If successful, repeat steps 1-6 and take a good look at the services
that are unchecked at present. Start turning them on one at a time,
rebooting, and trying to install updates.

Let us know what the results of this are as well.

Sincerely,

Pat Walters [MSFT]

Disabling Norton firewall worked for me.

I tried all the steps outlined in the "troubleshooting" guide (check proxy
settings, stop/restart service, adding sites to trusted list). None of that
worked.

I had to disable Norton firewall.

Cliff

BTW, I had my Windows firewall on instead. So I was finally able to manually
download and install security patches once I disabled the Norton firewall and
used the Windows firewall.

I have not seen this behavior before and I'm unsure why it is appearing now.
I have not changed my Norton firewall configuration for such a long time. As
long as I had the download sites in my "Trusted Sites" list, I never had
problems in the past.

Lotsa luck...
Cliff
