80072F78 after installing KB824105 and KB883357

Hi!

In our Environment (XP SP1) we all have the problem, that we cant
reach the windowsupdate-site any more. We get the error 80072F78.
We´re using ISA2000 as Proxy and over a direct connection everything
works fine.

There are already KB-Articles hat are describing this and similiar
problems in connection with ISA2000 but the described solutions just
dont work. Furthermore we found out, that this problems appears only
after applying on of the newer hotfixes obtained over windowsupdate.

Today i had a client where everything workes fine. I installed all
available Important Hotfixes (except .NET Framework 1.1). After the
restart Windowsupdate was still working. Two new hotfixes appeard
(824105 and 883357) and after that the error 80072F78 was there.

Even the deinstallation of these the hotfixes didnt solve this
problem.

Problem Description:
Windows Update has encountered an error and cannot display the requested
page.

Resolutions:
This error is proxy/firewall related, so double-check your firewall/proxy
settings. Try disabling your firewall and see if the error persists.
CheckPoint Firewall is one product that is a known culprit of this error.
Make sure that TCP/IP ports 80 and 443 are open in both directions. Make
sure your firewalls are not blocking scripting functions on web site. This
error is the result of your PC's inability to connect to a component of the
Windows Update site. Disable all 3rd party applications (like Anti-Virus
software) before accessing the site. Here are a few ways to try to resolve
this issue:

Suggestion 1
===========

Check your HOSTS file and make sure you don't have any static IP entries for
the Windows Update web site listed in the file. If you are running
Win98/ME, the HOSTS file will be in this folder:

C:\Windows

If you are running WinNT/2K/XP, it will be in this folder:

C:\WINDOWS\system32\drivers\etc

You can use Notepad to open the HOSTS file. You may need to "tell" Windows
to use Notepad to open the file.

Applications like web accelerators, TweakMasterDNS, etc. can add static IP
entries for the Windows Update site into your HOSTS file and when this
happens you will get the 0x80072F76 error message.

Suggestion 2
===========

Check your firewall/proxy settings and also try disabling your firewall.
This error is the result of your PC's inability to connect to a component of
the Windows Update site. Disable all 3rd party applications (including
anti-virus) before accessing the site.

Suggestion 3
===========

You may be able to resolve this issue by adding the following Web sites to
the trusted sites list in Internet Options:

http://Windowsupdate.microsoft.com
http://V4.Windowsupdate.microsoft.com
https://v4.Windowsupdate.microsoft.com (Note: The https is correct)
http://Download.Windowsupdate.com

To add these web sites to the list, follow these steps:

1. Open Internet Explorer.
2. Click "Tools," and then click "Internet Options."
3. Click "Security."
4. Click the Trusted Sites icon.
5. Click "Sites."
6. Clear the check box "Require server verification (httpsfor all sites in
this zone."
7. Add all four sites listed above.

Suggestion 4
===========

This issue may be resolved by adding the Windows Update sites to the
exceptions list in the Internet Options Proxy Settings.
To access the Exceptions settings:

1. Open Internet Explorer
2. Click "Tools" and then click "Internet Options."
3. Click "Connections" and then click "LAN Settings."
4. Click "Advanced" and add windowsupdate.microsoft.com;
v4.windowsupdate.microsoft.com, and download.windowsupdate.com to the
exceptions list.If you run other proxy/firewall software, then add the sites
to the exception list for those applications as well.

Hi!

After installing this rollup update, the problem is solved. I tried
it on 3 clients.

As WU worked fine for Jürgen before, but stopped to work after
installing some updates, the suggestions on that Web page isn't
really relevant.

For this type of cases, it is usually one of the latest cumulative
updates that causes this error. Installing the IE rollup update
(that includes the cumulative update + some additional non-security
related updates) often solves the problem, just as it did for Jürgen
(see his follow-up post).

Note that next time Microsoft releases a cumulative update for Internet
Explorer, you may experience the problem again.

Then you will need to download a newer version of the IE update rollup
as well (that includes the cumulative update + some additional
non-security related updates). Note that the IE update rollups are
not delivered through Windows Update.

Yes, i will keep that in mind. Tnx again.

This ia very poorly documented by MS and their own support staff cannot find
this in response to error 80072F78 ! I've been battling with this for
weeks now and just because I use shorewall firewall on a Mandrake Linux
platform, they simply say it's not their problem.

I'm downloading this now and hope it fixes my problem.
