I've come across this error not only in windows update, but trying to install
any application off the internet. I've tried various methods to fix this.
Nothing works.

Hello spgy9,

This problem may occur when the component store that contains information
about Vista components is corrupted.

To resolve this problem, follow these steps:

1. Click Start, type cmd in the Start Search box, and then click Command
Prompt under Programs.

If you are prompted for an administrator password or for a confirmation,
type the password, or click Allow.

Note If you do not have administrator rights and permissions, start the
Command Prompt program by right-clicking Command Prompt, clicking Run as
administrator, and then typing administrator credentials.

2. At the command prompt, type the following command, and then press ENTER:

reg delete HKLM\COMPONENTS /v StoreDirty

After you run this command, reinstall any updates or components that did not
install successfully.

I hope this post is helpful.

Let us know how it works ºut.

I am having this problem with my laptop too. I am currently using Vista and
wanting to update the window to install programmes...however, no luck as yet.
I tried the cmd message too..but to no avail.
