I tried both the Automatic Updates method as well as going to the page for
the KB article and running the MSU file.

I recieved the same error in both cases.

Below is the complete segment from the WU log for the installation attempt.


It appears to be sumised actually in two lines actually:

Hello,
Everytime I see that error message it appears to be an expired certificate
on the machine.
Has the time been moved forward and or back on this machine?
trying running the System Update Readiness Tool and see what it reports?

Thanks, that was the problem.

The certificate on one of the cat files in 937287 had expired. The file date
on the cat file on my machine was august of 2007, so I must have had the
file, but not needed the pakage until now when it was a prereq for another
component.

The tool you reccomended worked great.

After running it created a log file in: %systemroot%\Logs\CBS\CheckSUR.log

which specifically called out exactly what the problem was an which CAT file
to check the cert on. I saw that the cert expired 12/22/2007, so I set my
system date to before then and tried the MSU install for that package
(937287) again.

Sure enough that worked. All seems fixed now and WU says all updates
installed.
