I recently upgraded to win xp sp2. I then allowed automatic update to install
the next lot of required updates. All installed correctly except for 816093:
Security Update Microsoft Virtual Machine (Microsoft VM), so I installed this
successfully via the Windows Update website.
My problem now is automatic update insists on installing this same file at
every boot. If I choose to let it update it says it will overwrite the
existing file, and still wants to re-install after re-boot.

If I rename the msjava.dll it stops the automatic update and windows update
says I already have the file installed and won't allow me to update/reinstall
816093.

My question is where do I go from here? Can I safely delete msjava.dll or is
there a workaround.

That is often a symptom of an anti-virus or other security app
preventing the complete installation of an update.

Did you have a version of msjava.dll installed before you attempted
this update? Otherwise you shouldn't have tried it or it shouldn't have
let you try it.

Try to Run... (e.g. press Win-R and enter wjview
What happens? If you see WJView Help what version is showing
in the first line?

Look for more clues about what is happening in the logs.
E.g. perform a Win-F search for %SystemDrive%\*.log
files containing msjava
