84 failed updates

I had to reinstall WXP Pro (as an upgrade), hence lost all updates.
Microsoft Update shows all 84 updates downloaded and ready to install, but
they don't install. Clicking the "red button" fails to bring up an error
code for any of the 84. Also, I had to run reset.cmd to clear permissions
just to install Windows Installer 3.1 previous to the failed updates.

Updates are not installed successfully from Windows Update, from Microsoft
Update, or by using Automatic Updates after you repair a Windows XP
installation:

Hi,

You can try this.

Just copy the text and paste in the notepad and save it as update.bat on the
desktop.

Then run the update.bat from the desktop.

The content of the file starts here:

net stop cryptsvc
net stop wuauserv
net stop BITS

***end***

This will rename the SoftwareDistribution and the CatRoot2 folder and
register all the dll files and this will fix the problem. Once the files
completes try to perform updates.

Let me know if your problem is solved. We solve all the update problem using
this update file.

Up to this point I've jumped through a half-dozen well-intentioned firey
hoops--and finally your solution worked! Thanks PA Bear!
