86 Windows xp2 updates won't install

I had to reinstall windows xp2 from the disc because I kept getting crashes.
That installed IE 6, which kept crashing. I tried to download IE7 but
couldn't do it online. (Failed to install). So I sent for the IE 7 disc (had
to pay for it!) It installed O.K. from the disc. But now there are 86
updates, and though I've downloaded them, no way can I get them to install. I
have spent 4 nights trying to do it.
I have cleared internet history, cookies and temp files. I have turned off
Norton internet Security, and disabled Spyware Doctor. I have added the
Microsft update site to trusted sites, and security is set to default level.
Re-booted and tried again. Still no joy. I made sure that english usa is in
the languages section. I have not yet tried the scannow procedure. Should I
do this or is there some other option?
