I am getting the code 87FF36B0 problem while trying to install SP2. I have
tried the line in Run dialog, secedit /configure /cfg
%windir%\repair\secsetup.inf /db secsetup.sdb
/verbose /areas regkeys

At first it wouldn't find secedit, then I changed the command a bit by
putting the exact address but now It finds but cannot open it. I get this
message 2 times in the row. Please help, thank you

"Holdyourlight",

I am sorry you are encountering this issue. Were you actually able to
install SP2, but then had issues? Or does it give you an error as you start
the installation. Is the account you are using to install the update a
local administrator? An easy way to check this is:
1. Click Start
2. Click Run
3. Type: cmd <Enter>
4. In the Command Prompt window, type: echo %USERNAME% <Enter>
5. The result should be your current user name.
6. Type: net localgroup administrators
7. In the resulting list, find your current user name. If you do not find
it, this is at least part of the problem.

Example:

C:\>echo %USERNAME%
Pat

C:\>net localgroup administrators
Alias name administrators
Comment Administrators have complete and unrestricted access to the
computer/domain

Members

----------------------------------------------------------------------------
---
Administrator
DOMAIN1\Pat
DOMAIN1\Domain Admins

The command completed successfully.

Would you mind trying the installation from a direct download, versus the
Windows Update website?
You might try using the direct download point for Windows XP SP2.

SP2 is available at the Microsoft Download Center (please disregard the IT
Professionals and Developers portion of this, as it will run on an
individual computer as well: (266 MB)

http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/d...5-9e368d3cdb5a

8. Click on the link above, and then Save it to a directory you will
remember.
9. Uncheck the "Close this dialog box when download is complete"
10. When the download completes, in the dialog box, click the Open button.
11. Follow the prompts to install.

Write back and let us know if you encounter any problems.

Sincerely,

Pat Walters [MSFT]

The installation process stopped after a couple of minutes.Yes, I am the
local administrator. The message I get is 'The requested section was not
present in the activation context'.Keep also in mind that I can't either
install SP1, I get 643 code error. Will downloading the whole file 266MB, will
solve the problem? I read somewhere that I also need to restore my system to
the point that I had not tried to install SP2 at all, but I am not willing to
do that. Why can't I open secedit.sdb? Is it something to do with the program
it opens with (AppFix & AppHelp Installer) because I don't seem to have it.
