Hi there, after an image of SBS2K3 was ghosted over to a completely new
server(as in different from the original machine,) the critical and security
updates failed to install using automatic update. I instead downloaded the
security patches manually and applied them, only returning me with the
message "failed to migrate dependent packages...."

Anyone have any ideas on this?

just speculating but perhapes because of the different hash value
of your hardware, the serial/authentication of your system is now different.

And as a protection mechanisim, windows wont install on it??

Was your original server an OEM install?
Might need a MS technical call, and get a new serial?
Not sure... Something along those lines was brought up at the last
MS conference I want to.

I am not sure if the original server was an OEM install. But when I
rebuild/repair windows after ghosting the new image onto the new machine, I
was forced to re-activate the server due to "major hardware componenet
changes," as reported by the server.
