Updates are not installed successfully from Windows Update, from
Microsoft Update, or by using Automatic Updates after you repair a
Windows XP installation

start at the top of the list, go to download center under get more updates,
at top of page you will see where it says search , pick (all downloads) next
type in the KB number on your list, and press go. next window says download,
this takes time to do all of them but is only way, click run and check
,restart later box , I did all 84 of mine and after works great

From a previous post on the (apparent) exact same issue as this: (see post
titled "71 updates fail repeatedly....").

(This wasn't my answer it was from TaurArian who replied to the previous
OP's question about update failures, I just noticed this second post about
the same issue).

Try the following:-

Click Start, select run and type the following (pressing okay after each
one):-

net.exe stop wuauserv

regsvr32 wuapi.dll
regsvr32 wuaueng.dll
regsvr32 wuaueng1.dll
regsvr32 wucltui.dll
regsvr32 wups.dll
regsvr32 wups2.dll
regsvr32 wuweb.dll
regsvr32 MSXML3.dll

net.exe start wuauserv

FOLLOW ANDREW MURRAYS INSTRUCTIONS, IT WORKS.

I had 89 updates that would not install, just followed instructions, exit
cmd line and after about a minute i had the "updates are ready for your
computer" icon pop up, clicked on "Express install" and all 89 updates
installed perfectly.

This works.

Had to repair an install for my neighbor whose dad is in hospice and this
info *saved the day*.

MS needs to put this info on thier home page and put it in a batch file or
something.

Cheers! to TaurArian and Andrew for reposting it (can't find the original
post)

Even if you searched only the newsgroups - did you come across this:

Updates are not installed successfully from Windows Update,
from Microsoft Update, or by using Automatic Updates after
you repair a Windows XP installation
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/943144

(Try it even if you did a clean, not repair, installation.)
(Try it even if you performed some sort of restore - not repair install.)
(Try it even if you did an upgrade installation.)

Do all suggested methods.
