After the SP1 for Internet Explorer 6 is downloaded into my computer through
Windows Update, my computer freezes during installation.

The download works fine. The installation takes forever (about 4 hours to
finish), but when the installation is complete acording to the installation
meter, the computer freezes and it never gets installed. I tried using both
the automatic window update, and going personally to the window update page.

I also tried going to the download center and installing it manually. When I
try to install it manually, I get the message that the file is linked to
missing export NTDLL.DLL:NtShutdownSystem.

My OS is Windows ME.

The update you downloaded from the MS Download Center is for XP, not ME.
The only way to obtain KB912812 for ME is through Automatic Updates or
by accessing the Windows Update Catalog :

Temporarily disable the installed antivirus program prior to downloading
and saving it. DO NOT RUN it from the WU Catalog site.
Close Internet Explorer. Boot to Safe Mode :

Install KB912812
Remember to reenable the AV !

Hi MowGreen,

Thanks for replying. I tried what you told me, but it didn't work. I
downloaded [com_microsoft.IE6-0SP1-KB912812-Windows-98-ME-x86-178530]. I boot
in safe mode. I install the update. It finishes and everything seems fine,
but after waiting a while, I tried to shut down the computer, it gives me the
messages that "?" is still running. It doesn't give me the name of the file
or program. Since I don't want to end the installation, I choose cancel (not
Wait, or End Task). The computer shuts down. When I boot again and go to WU,
It tells me I still need the update. (Note: My system restore is off).

Any Idea what to do?
