Having had the same problem as yourself I have
made several attempts to resolve the issue without
success.
However I have now resolved the problem on my
computer by using System Restore. I just went back
to a restore point that I thought was clear of the
Vista corrupt or missing files. I must admit that
whem running it and during restart I had my fingers
crossed, but everything worked out OK and the updates are back to normal.
There is a comment I would like to point out and that is I have been using a Registry Cleaner and after a large Windows update I would have used it
to clean up my system. Whether this has any bearing
in the corrupt or missing files I cannot say.
Since my system has been back to normal I have not
used it just in case, I am waiting to see if the
problem returns when I dont use it.
The only other thing that I have done as a part of an earlier fix was to rename a folder called "SoftwareDistribution" to "SoftwareDistributionOLD" and make a new folder
"SoftwareDistribution"
Well I hope this works for you as it has for me.
