If your hardware will support it, yes. Personally, when upgrading from 9x to
an NT-based OS, I prefer a clean install rather than an upgrade in place -
but it may be just fine. Back up your data first, just in case - uninstall
any antivirus software, unplug everything but monitor/keyboard/mouse. Might
want to get WinXP drivers for video & NIC from your hardware mfr and keep
them in a safe place first, too.
Before connecting to the internet after upgrading, enable your firewall -
never connect to the Internet without a firewall, not even for a second.

to your question.
