Hello,

I am running Windows 98se.

The following updates keep appearing saying that I need to update them,
which I have:

823559 and KB837009.

When I look at my installation history, it shows that they have been
successfully installed everytime!

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Cheers!

Clear History, delete Cookies and delete Temporary Internet Files (including
offline files) via IE: Tools > Options > General, then...

1. Download the Cumulative Security Update for Outlook Express 6 Service
Pack 1 (KB837009; all OSS) from the following link, saving it to your
Desktop:

http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/d...displaylang=en

[ Optional: 2. Restart the computer in Safe Mode. (During the reboot, keep
pressing the F8 key until the Windows Startup menu appears > Choose Safe
Mode > Enter.)

3. Rename the downloaded file to KB837009.EXE and copy it to C:\ (the root
directory of drive C; assumes drive C is the boot drive)

4. Start > Run > (type in) C:\KB837009.EXE /N:V (Note the spaces) > press
ENTER

5. Close the command window.

6. Reboot [into Windows] and check in at Windows Update to see if the
problem persists.

PA Bear,
When you say Clear History in your response to this post, what element are
you actually clearing?
After reading this post, I can see my Win 98 SE PC has downloaded the 837009
update three times now over a period of time with a "Successful" install on
each occasion and it is asking to do it again. As far as I can see when I
refer to the Technet bulletin, the Registry information is correct along
with the file revisions (superseded by later updates in some cases).
However, it doesn't appear in Add/Remove Programs or in the list of updates
in the About Internet Explorer. Do you know what criteria Windows update
software is looking for in the PC software to confirm whether an update has
been installed or not? I will try again in safe mode and see what happens.
Thanks for the info.

Clear history = IE Tools > Internet Options > General > Clear history.

/Why/ it's happening is a long story. The instructions I posted should fix
it.

[The headers of your posts here (Microsoft Outlook Express 6.00.2800.1437)
tell me you have a later OE update installed (823353). Win98 was not
supposed to be offered this update and uninstalling it (if it's found in
Add/Remove Programs) probably won't help. My instructions force the install
of 837009; Afterwards, Windows Update should be happy.]
