Do you have IE9 Beta installed? That's why. Hopefully it will be fixed
before IE9 goes RTW.

Yes I do although Firefox is my default browser. Thanks

Bad advice, Winnie.

If the ubiquitous "?" is Ruby's only complaint, why throw out the baby with
the bathwater. Some of we IE9 Beta users are very happy campers. It is a
significant improvement over IE8 and, IMHO, is better than FF or Chrome. My
combination of W7/32, IE9b, and WLM 2011 performs pretty much problem-free
for me. And yes, I know about the lack of setoff symbols >> and I dislike
the bland look of WLM 2011 but these are nits compared to the fact that they
work reliably and quickly for my everyday home usage. As IE9 is in Beta,
it's doubtful if you will see the "?" in the final release and I would bet
the >> problem is eventually fixed in WLM 2011.

?Works like a charm for me! No more preceding "?" in my sent messages. Now
WLM 2011 is perfect, right. Are there any unintended consequences "?" ;-)

As you've been told, this only occurs if you have IE9 beta installed. If you
want a workaround, change your Send character encoding to Unicode (UTF-8).
The setting is at Options > Send > International Settings. To open the
Options sheet, press Ctrl-Shift-O. You should also deselect Reply to
messages using the format in which they were sent unless you're sure you'll
remember to change the character encoding to Unicode before sending. To do
that, click the Encoding button on the Options tab of the ribbon.

Very interesting! When I send a message to myself, the "?" does not appear.
That's how I mistakenly thought that the problem had disappeared. Note also
elsewhere in this news group that I sent a test message and it did not have
the"?" Any ideas?

If WE2011's quality is any indication, there will be no motivation to fix a
"triviality" that only affects a simple mail app. If you don't see it affect
browser performance, I suspect it will still be there when IE9 is officially
released.
