AC97 audio not working in Vista 32

Looks like i join the list of people with vista audio problems...
I have a MSI 915p combo2 Vers. 2 motherboard with Realtek AC97 6 channel
audio integrated with the chipset.
I have a dual boot setup with xp pro on the other partition so I know
everything works fine with that.
BUT after the fresh install of vista ultimate 32 bit on another partition I
find I am without audio. I have downloaded the appropriate vista drivers
from realtek and tried older versions without success. With the newest
drivers however i get audio from my REAR SPEAKERS AND SUBWOOFER ONLY. Oh and
by the way I have a set of logitech x530 5.1 speakers connected. center
speaker and front left and right DO NOT WORK when playing audio. Now heres
where it gets interesting. When using the test speakers thing in the audio
config I actually do get sound out of ALL speakers, albeit the front and rear
speakers are swapped meaning I hear rear sounds in the front and visa-versa.
If anyone else has had and solved a similar problem id be glad to hear how u
overcame this mess. In the meantime I will be reverting to my XP to listen to
my music.

Have you let Vista do its updates?

When I installed it on my computer, it didn't recognize the AC'97 system
either. After it updated itself, I had audio.

Yeah Ive done that its not that I haven't updated. I think its drivers that
may not have been made yet to be honest.

You can to to Realtek's website and download the driver. I had to do that
for Vista x64.

Had the same problem with exactly the same speakers. Unplugged them from
their sockets and plugged them back in one by one. Realtek detected them
immediately and set them up. Give it a try.

Thanks for the tip Albert but that only works if your drivers are OK in the
first instance, i tried replugging them in many different ways but it didn't
solve anything.
I DID try to run the original XP drivers from the motherboard CD in XP
compatibility mode. This allowed me to install the drivers and Soundmax
utility BUT the same problem still occurs....No sound through centre channel
or rear speakers. Even after telling it I had stereo speakers and only
plugging the green jack in (which is what your supposed to do if u set the
output to stereo, the self powered logitechs usually split into 5.1 after
that) I still had the same problem.
Anyone else got any suggestions?

OK, I have now managed to get some sort of sound out of vista. I got the
supposedly latest drivers off the MSI (motherboard) site. These drivers
aren't the right ones for my exact audio chip (ADI1888) but they do sorta
work. I also found the "speaker fill" checkbox in the audio enhancements
tab. It puts sound through all the speakers although its only stereo split
between 5 channels. It seems the audio codec might be to blame as well
because of the fact that the sound coming out is REALLY bad quality, i mean
soft base and dialog from movies only comes through the center channel.
Reverting to XP after giving up, vistas sound makes the stuff coming out of
XP sound like studio quality.
Suggestions much appreciated.

Are you running 64 bit, If so this might help.

Thanks for the effort Ian, but as the heading to this discussion alludes I
am running Vista Ultimate 32 bit. Also that page was full of ASUS drivers, I
have an MSI motherboard, however others may find that site VERY useful.

I have now come to realize after many hours scouring forums and websites
that Vista will not be able to properly utilize analogue integrated sound
devices or even low end (and some high end) audio cards. Microsoft obviously
chose not to re-use a critical component from XP (HAL) which is the main
reason that older drivers will cause problems rather than allow you to play
audio. HAL (its short for something, google it if you want) was what allowed
audio to bypass the CPU and go directly to the sound device in XP.

Such a large change means that chip manufacturers such as realtek wont be in
any hurry to PROPERLY revamp drivers for Vista. Due to the wide range of
different chipsets and drivers I also highly doubt MS will be able to fix
this problem with a miracle windows update.
