I have a Sony Vaio Windows XP Home. I have tried to download SP2 many times
but everytime a popup window shows" Access is denied" and installation
failed. I even uninstall anti-virus software to eliminate possible conflict.

The Event Viewer shows following errors:

EventID 7000, Source Service Control Manager
The HTTP service failed to start due to the following error:
The specified procedure could not be found.

Event ID: 4373, Source: NtServicePack
Windows XP Service Pack 2 installation failed.
Access is denied.

Event ID:20, Source: Windows Update Agent, Category: Installation,
Description: Installation Failure: Windows failed to install the following
update with error 0x80070005: Windows XP Service Pack 2.

Event ID:4374, Source: NtServicePack
Windows XP Service Pack 2 installation failed, leaving Windows XP partially
updated.
Service Pack 2 installation did not complete.

EventID: 7023, Service: Service Control Manager (error message repeat every
6 sec)
The Application Management service terminated with the following error:
The specified module could not be found.

Please help.

I had this, but not a Sony.
It would load up to a point, could not proceed, uninstalled itself.

Stupid design. Should have stopped and allowed you to fix the issue.
But, what was wrong was "permissions" were not set right on probably
hundreds of folders.

Don't ask me what that means, all I know is I saw this part about
"permissions" and they were all set to not allow you to do what was needed.

A friend, a MSCSE, halped, found a utility to change them all firxt, then it
loaded.

But then we had no internet.

It locked up at a specific port.

That took more time to fix.

I would blame the brains at MS, except there are so many computer models by
so many manuafcturers with so many other programs installed, I guess this
kind of stuff happens from time to time.

See if you have a readout of what failed.
