Hi. Have tried all day yesterday and some of this morning to get past the AID
error message.

Did the MS KB "fix". Did not work. (http://support.microsoft.com/kb/873148)

Did the "reset.cmd" fix (http://aumha.net/viewtopic.php?t=8125). Did not work.

Here is part of the error in setupapi.log:

"c:\windows\softwaredistribution\download\16b2c96a 0c41f4dfdb4d3cc228a4f819\update\update.inf" failed. Error 5: Access is denied.
#E064 Parsing install section [ProductInstall.GlobalRegistryChanges.Install]
in
"c:\windows\softwaredistribution\download\16b2c96a 0c41f4dfdb4d3cc228a4f819\update\update.inf" failed. Error 5: Access is denied.
#E008 Setting registry value
HKLM\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\ssdpsrv\\De pendOnService
#E033 Error 5: Access is denied.

When I look in the registry, the key looks like this:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\ControlSet002\Services\S SDPSRV\$%&'()*+,-./0123$%&'()*+,-./0123$%&'()*+,-./0123$%&'()*+,-./0123$%&'()*+,-./0123$%&'()*+,-./0123$%&'(

Used a bunch of registry cleaners to "clean" my registry.

Did not try to delete the "garbled" key above, yet.

Have not yet used filemon and regmon while installing to see what other info
could be helpful.

Tried installing XP SP2 in Safe mode using both my normal user account
(which is an Admin), and my Admin account, to no avail.

Tried reinstalling SP1A. Can't. So now I need to move forward.

Ran adaware, Spybot, AVG to make sure I don't have viruses. Everything is
clean.

Does anyone have any other ideas? Please don't rehash solutions I've already
tried.

If you need me to post any info to the forum, would be happy to, and I DO
appreciate all your help, folks! Where would we be without the Internet?

David

The above could very well be your problem.

Using Registry Cleaners you can expect this and many other issues. They are snake oil remedies and all they do is harm. You just found out the hard way. If you do not know your Registry and what these cleaners are removing then you should not use them. Did you use ones that made back ups before it removed any strings ? If it had the option for backup and you selected it then have those backups put back in to the Registry. Most likely from your description of (bunch of Registry Cleaners) you do not have backups of most .

My comments and answer in my previous post was more on a serious nature telling you the probable issue and was not a smart alek comment.
I suggest to you to do a Repair install and see if it will correct your Operating System which you did not mention and I cannot tell because you are posting via the Web interface. So I am presuming it is Windows XP Home or Pro without SP2

Peter,

Thanks for the additional information. It is appreciated.

I actually used only the highly rated registry cleaners on download.com, and
they did incluede backups. Unfortunately, since then, I have done a whole
bunch of other things, and would be averse to trying to undo all the "cleans"
I performed (I guess it couldn't hurt.

Unfortunately, at this point, since this morning, I did the following. There
was a suggestion to turn off all my browser helper objects, and download the
network version of the SP2 install, which I did. Then I tried to reinstall
SP2 via Safe Mode, using my login ID (it is an Admin ID), and the install
completed.

The problem though, was after the install, I can no longer boot using the C:
drive. Fortunately, I had a 2ndary drive (F) which I am using now (under
SP1A) in order to use the computer, etc.

I tried reinstalling SP1A back to drive C from the reinstallation CD, but
now the PC doesn't recognize the C drive during the SP1A install.

So, I'm trying to see what options are available.

Here is what I think.

1. I can't currently boot to the C: drive using Safe Mode or normal mode.
Maybe I can using (boot the Command Prompt). Haven't tried yet.

2. I do have a USB SATA connection to my C drive now (I actually took it out
of the machine), thinking that I can install Sp2 to it externally. Not
getting very far in this area. Although I am scanning the drive now for
errors.

3. Try to resolve the problem where I can't detect the C drive for the SP1A
reinstall and go back.

Any other ideas?

BTW yes, it is XP Home.

David

In thinking about this some more, I think I'm just going to buy a new hard
drive, install Sp2 on that and then move any necessary files to it from my
old C drive (as well as reinstall programs). Was trying to avoid that, but
this is turning into a nightmare.
