SP3...
For Windows XP one would have to assume...

- Are you logged in as a user with administrative rights?

- What antivirus application do you use?

- Did you properly prepare before starting the installation of SP3?

With proper preparation - you are unlikely to have problems - and if you
have been performing proper maintenance all along - even if you do - you are
only out a short period of time (restoring from the backup/drive image you
made wisely before diving in...)

A place to get FREE support for SP3 installation issues *from Microsoft*...

WinXP SP3 - Read all prerequisites for a successful installation
http://msmvps.com/blogs/harrywaldron...tallation.aspx

Steps to take before you install Windows XP Service Pack 3
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/950717

Suggestions:

1) Download the full SP3 installation file and/or burn the ISO download to
CD.
2) Ensure (as well as plausible) you have no spyware/malware by doing a full
scan with SuperAntiSpyware and MalwareBytes.
3) CHKDSK
4) Defragment
5) Ensure your hardware drivers are up to date (from the hardware
manufacturer's respective web pages.)
6) Reboot right before you try to install SP3.
7) Disconnect from the internet before installing (physically.)
8) Disable your antivirus and antispyware applications when you are about to
install SP3.

Some (if not all) of that is covered in the above links.

- Have you looked through this Microsoft Knowledge Base Article?

I have SP3 installed and am repeatedly asked to install SP2 also but am
unable. Is it necessary since I have SP3 installed?

Read carefully before you post - particularly before you hijack another's
posting.

In other words - read the title of the update you are being offered
verbatim. I seriously doubt you are being offered Windows XP service pack
2 - but SP2 for something else.

Seeing that you are "Stacie T" and posted this elsewhere - the same answer
goes for the last time - when you posted your own message instead of
hijacking this one.

It tells you exactly what it is for in the text you quoted and it is not for
Windows XP itself.

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/954430

Where it has troubleshooting tips under the section titled, "Known issues
with this security update"

Is it repeating?

This security update may repeatedly appear in the update list on Microsoft
Update or on Windows Update if one of the system files is corrupted or if it
has not been updated correctly. For more information about this issue, click
the following article number to view the article in the Microsoft Knowledge
Base:

941729 (http://support.microsoft.com/kb/941729/ ) Security updates for
Microsoft XML Core Services 4.0 Service Pack 2 may repeatedly appear in the
update list on Microsoft Update or on Windows Update
