Many people are having the same problem. Unfortunately, Microsoft's article
describing how to fix the problem did not work and in fact directed users to
an incorrect logfile that was to be used to diagnose the problem. Those
users who were directed to the correct logfile from outside sources and were
able to go into their registry and manually change key permissions, still
were not able to install SP2, or the installed version resulted in
malfunction of their computers and software. Perhaps Microsoft's removing of
the article (MKB 873148) is their first step in recognizing this bug and
doing something about it. My advice to you as a user would be not to install
SP2 on your computer until Microsoft works out all of the bugs or you will be
risking computer or software malfunction. IBM has also made that
recommendation to their employees:
