Over the last year or so something happened to our computer that made some
programs act strange or not at all (ie: 3 out or 4 users could not use WMP
{media player} and some programs keep crashing. Short of doing a reformat and
reinstall I decided to reinstall XP Pro, then allow all upgrades to install.
When I reinstalled XP pro media player worked for all users but the problem
is I cannot upgrade to SP1a or SP2. I have no problem altering the registry,
if the info is legit? So the problem I am having is Access denied message for
both service packs 1a and 2. When I go to the update site the site says I
already have SP2 installed, execpt I dont, it must be residual or left over
from the original install of SP2. Should I delete something before I install
XP? I am trying not to format and install as there is to much data to loose.
I am so close to backing up all data and doing a NTFS format and install. Any
help, would be much apprieciated. I have tried to delete SP2 from the
system, but it says it is not there, only Windows upgrade page says is
already installed, FORMAT IS GETTING CLOSE!!!!
Thank you, John Fraser

I went out a purchased a new 80gig drive for $60 and did a clean install of
XP and all upgrades etc. Install went without a hitch. Using old drive as a
second slave with all data intact, walla. I will transfer data as required to
new drive.
