Access denied on Service Pack install

Greetings. I've tried both service pack 1 and 2 on an XP Pro machine. The
download goes ok but partway into the install I get "access denied" box, no
error number or message, just click ok to revert to prior state.

Antivirus is off. Per KB822798 I've re-registered DLL files, renamed
Catroot2 directory, renamed Edb.log file and cleared the software
distribution folder. Same results.

Any help would be appreciated, thanks.

Found a fix that worked for me. Follow KB 873148, which describes how to
find a registry key that needs to have the permissions changed. After doing
so the service pack installed fine.
