Access printer without Authenticating

Hi,

i´ve got a small problem here with an printer access without authentication.
I have some clients which are not member of the domain, but they should be
able to use the printers on the central print server.

I did already install theprinter on the cilent, and on the first
installation i could print without any problem, but everytime when the
cilent is shutdown, logoff or removed from the network, i cannot access the
printer anymore.
To get it running, i have to connect to the print server providing my
credentials.
I think the problem is, that an access to the printer is not bringing up
authentication window.

So, the question is, if it is possible to access an printer using an print
server without providing the credentials?

Thanks

alex

Hi Marcin,

this was the first what i did, but this did not solve the issue.
I am pretty sure that it has nothing to do with the printer itself.

Forgot to mention, the printer server is an 2k3r2 sp2.

thanks

enable the guest account if you can. It's not the best practice.

Is the printer a network printer, or locally attached to the server?

If it's a network printer, you can print via a standard IP printing port.

However, if it's a local printer, you will either have to enalbe the
guest account as Alan pointed out, or you could create another user
account with minimal permissions that they can use to log in with.

Brooke

Hi Alan,

the activation of the guest account did the trick.
We did not restrict the access to the printers, so it is not a problem.
But, i need the access for collegues who are using a vpn tunnel over the
wifi to access the internal network. So, the print access is only allowed
for the ones using the vpn.
But they should not login to a server to get the printing working, so your
solution is just fitting perfect for my problem.

many thanks

alex

I'm afraid they now have read access to your file shares on that server too.
If they (file shares) have default security setting: Everyone - Read. If
this is the case, you are advised to:
1. Remove default security setting for 'Everyone - Read'
2. Add new security setting for 'Authenticated Users - Read'
