Accumulation of Security Updates, Removal/Remedy

Since XP Pro SP2 "clean" (re)install 10/14/2006 I've gathered 60 Security
Updates, several Hotfixes, etc., now cumulatively as large as the OS.
As before the reinstall, my 40% free HD w/ 1G ram =molasses. MS Office apps
slowest of all.

*I scanned with hijackthis, MS MSRT, Win Defender, Norton VS, SpyBot. Yep,
with all of their current updates. No flags.

MS Access dbs are the only real size/code growth/change spots and they're
alone on a dedicated partition w/ lots of headroom.

I gather from the posts that no smart peepulz can/will recommend
uninstall/deletion (except in the case of the $uninstall folders themselves).
So...

Q: Would it help to do a clean reinstall of XP and all apps every 6 months?
That is, are the MS updates comprehensive or collective: would I instantly
accumulate the same size &/or number of files?
I've gotta get some work out of this thing and put less INto it before they
send me an abacus & crayons or a final paycheck......
Thanks all,

Have you considered the possibility that there might be a hardware defect in
your PC?

No, this is not a normal scenario.

An occasional hard disk defrag might come in handy, though.
