active directory domain services unavailable

I have a dell laptop with vista connected by USB to an HP psc1210 printer.
It stopped printing today and I get a printer offline message on the print
que. When I try to "find printers" I get the active domain services
unavailable error message. The computer no longer makes its "ping" sound
when I plug or unplug the usb connection (I have plugged and unplugged both
computer and printer and installed and uninstalled the printer). Some driver
installed itself when I restarted the computer (without my permission) but
the printer stopped before this. I read on the internet that people get this
message out of the blue with Vista and it may be related to driver updates
and windows updates installing themselves. I am not reading of a fix for this
problem. My technical skills are modest at best...please help with this i
have midterm papers due soon!
