Active Sync, PC Browse, over WiFi

I am unable to see my PC or use ActiveSync from my HP iPAQ over a WiFi
connection. A USB connection works fine. I've read a number of the postings
on this subject and followed all of the setup parameter instructions. I can
get out to the web and pull mail over WiFi, so there is a connection.

After establishing a WiFi connnection on the PPC, when attempting to use
ActiveSync from the device, I get a message saying, "Unable to connect.
Verify your dialup or proxy settings are correct...." When attempting to
connect to my PC from Explorer (\\<computername> is the syntax I'm using) on
the PPC, I get a message telling me to configure a VPN connection, which is
incorrect as I'm using a private network with privately assigned IP addresses.

Can't figure this out. The PPC is named 'T-Mobile' - is the hyphen an
illegal character in that name? Windows Firewall settings are good. IP
addresses are dynamically assigned through DHCP - do I need to make those
static?

I think I've covered the easy steps. Any other suggestions?

Thanks.

You need to specify that the WiFi card is using a Work connection -
it's under Settings -> Connections, Network Cards. Ensure that the top
drop-down box reads "Work".

Hey Rob, thanks. That gets ActiveSync working. It looks, though, like an
internet connection now requires GPRS to fire up; previously, I could use the
WiFi connection to get out to the web. Is there a way to browse the PC and
sync the units, as well as use the WiFi connection for web browsing?

Yes, my settings look just like that. However, when I attempt to edit 'My
Work Network' and check the 'This network connects to the internet' box, it
doesn't take. I perform a soft reset and when I review the settings again,
that box is empty. So I'm stuck. When I go to 'Configure Network Adapters'
and select 'Work' (which is a different label than 'My Work Network' - why is
that?) I can sync wirelessly, but connecting to the internet uses the (much
slower) GPRS. When I select 'Internet' I can use WiFi to get out to the web,
but can't connect to my PC to sync. What gives here? I've had this same
problem with all of my PPC devices.

Thanks much.

Update on this. In 'Network Management' when I select 'My Work Network for
both the top and bottom programs, and check the 'This network connects to the
internet' box, it now seems to stay checked, but only when both sets of
programs (internet and private network) have 'My Work Network' as the
connection method. Once I select 'T-Mobile Connections' for the internet
programs, the check box won't stay selected in the 'My Work Network' settings
under private network. (Why won't this box stay checked?) So while this
allows for syncing and accessing the internet over WiFi, my problem now is
that when I'm on the road and want to use GPRS for pulling mail (which is set
up to be pushed down automatically through T-Mobile) or connecting to the
internet, I get a message saying 'Unable to connect. You have no modem
entries present, and no network card present.' Which makes sense, because
I've selected 'Work' for both sets of programs on the 'Network Management'
page. It seems that the device should be intelligent enough to use WiFi when
it's available and GPRS when it's not, so I don't have to continually change
settings.

Any other thoughts with this added info?

Thanks again.

Pocket PC certainly should be able to switch between networks, but it can't.
So we have to go in and change the settings every time we change locations.
That's in my top 5 requests for the next PPC OS.

I am afraid that is the way it works. In order for me to use my Targus V.90 56K dial modem I have to
switch to the "My ISP" setting in the top box. When I want to use the built-in 802.11b functionality
of my iPAQ 5555 I set everything to "My Work Network". Luckily for me I only use my dial modem on
random occasions while traveling or here at home for testing...
