When I originally went to the Windows Update site, I got the message to
install Active X, which I did. The bar went away, and I still get the
message on the screen that I have to install the 'website will not display
correctly on your computer without this control'. Argh! I'm stuck in a loop.

When I clicked on the troubleshooter, it kept asking me to enter an error
number. I never received an error number. I just installed Active X, the
bar went away, and I couldn't move forward.

I am on XP.

Please state your full Windows version (e.g., WinXP SP3) when posting to
this newsgroup.

Is this a sudden, new problem?

What anti-virus application or security suite is installed and is your
subscription current? What anti-spyware applications? What third-party
firewall (if any)?

Has a(nother) Norton or McAfee application ever been installed on this
machine (e.g., a free-trial version that came preinstalled when you bought
it)?

Try installing the lastest WindowsUpdate client manually from:
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/949104

Also, you will probably see an error in your windowsupdate.log (in the
windows directory) that may help.
