I use Windows 98SE.

Ever since I downloaded the Windows Updates on April 12, 2006, which were
"Cumulative Security Update for Internet Explorer 6 Service Pack 1
(KB912812)" and "Security Update for Microsoft Data Access Components 2.8
(KB911562)", I have been unable to run the Market Reseach Wizard from
Worldwide Brands. I receive an error that "Active X component can't create
object." I have been in touch with their tech support, and the cannot help
me. This program worked fine until I downloaded the update. I have also
noticed that eBay Enhanced Picture Services is no longer functioning and they
suggest corrupted Active X controls, too. I tried running Dr. Watson, and it
said Windows KB891711 altered the system files -- a windows update I loaded
last spring?! As I said, I did not have any problems until after the April
12th update. I'm guessing KB911562 is really the one that has messed
something up.

Any ideas for what I can do to fix things?

Thanks.

See http://msdn.microsoft.com/ieupdate/

See http://support.microsoft.com/kb/912812

This change (912812) is by design following the Eolas patent case.

I have Windows 98SE and the link you gave is for XP. Would it still work for
me?

Here's another clue:
I downloaded eBay's Accounting Assistant yesterday, but it won't open. It
says, "The .Net Data OLE DB Provider(System.Data.OleDb) requires Microsoft
Data Access Components(MDAC). Please install Microsoft Data Access
Components(MDAC) version 2.6 or later."

I am not familiar with MDAC stuff. Is this really what I need? Where can I
get it?

Thanks for the advice!

IN Win ME and in Win 98, there is one more ESSENTIAL thing to note
THE 911562 PATCH FOR MDAC2.8RTM DOES NOT WORK!!!
It breaks Help & Support, amongst other things.

Best advice is upgrade to MDAC2.8SP! from here
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/d...displaylang=en
then visit WU again for the new patch - which works properly with the SP1
files.
